Sinopsis

Theodore Roosevelt's "The Winning of the West: From the Alleghanies to the Mississippi, 1769-1776" presents a compelling and meticulously researched narrative of America'Äôs westward expansion during a critical period. Written in a vigorous prose style characteristic of Roosevelt's work, the book combines biography, history, and adventure, portraying the heroes and events that shaped the United States'Äô frontier. Through detailed accounts, Roosevelt examines the interplay of various forces'ÄîNative American tribes, early settlers, and European powers'Äîsetting the stage for the American ethos of exploration and conquest. The historical context during which the book was written, at the turn of the 20th century, reflects a growing national pride in American exceptionalism and an ideological justification for expansionism. The author, Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States, was deeply influenced by his experiences as a naturalist, writer, and politician. His fascination with America's wild landscapes and a strong sense of nationalism fueled his desire to document the nation'Äôs history. His commitment to progressive ideals and conservation also resonates throughout the narrative, reflecting his concerns about both natural resources and American identity. This book is an essential read for anyone interested in American history, especially those drawn to the themes of exploration and the complexities of colonization. Roosevelt's captivating storytelling brings historical figures to life, making it not just a historical account but also a vivid portrayal of the rugged American frontier spirit.

    American Quaker Romances -...

Quaker characters have peopled many an American literary work—most notably, "Uncle Tom's Cabin"—as Quakerism has been historically associated with progressive attitudes and the advancement of social justice. With the rise in recent years of the Christian romance market, dominated by American Evangelical companies, there has been a renewed interest in fictional Quakers. In the historical Quaker romances analyzed in this book, Quaker heroines often devote time to spiritual considerations, advocate the sanctity of marriage and promote traditional family values. However, their concern with social justice also leads them to engage in subversive behavior and to question the status quo, as illustrated by heroines who are active on the Underground Railroad or are seen organizing the Seneca Falls convention. Though relatively liberal in terms of gender, Quaker romances are considerably less progressive when it comes to race relations.
Thus, they reflect America's conflicted relationship with its history of race and gender abuse, and the country's tendency to both resist and advocate social change. Ultimately, Quaker romances reinforce the myth of America as a White and Christian nation, here embodied by the Quaker heroine, the all-powerful savior who rescues Native Americans, African Americans and Jews while conquering the hero's heart.

Discover the secret method used to build the world . . .

For millennia, humans have used one simple method to solve problems. Whether it's planting crops, building skyscrapers, developing photographs, or designing the first microchip, all creators follow the same steps to engineer progress. But this powerful method, the "engineering method", is an all but hidden process that few of us have heard of—let alone understand—but that influences every aspect of our lives.

Bill Hammack, a Carl Sagan Award–winning professor of engineering and viral "The Engineer Guy" on YouTube, has a lifelong passion for the things we make, and how we make them. Now, for the first time, he reveals the invisible method behind every invention and takes us on a whirlwind tour of how humans built the world we know today. From the grand stone arches of medieval cathedrals to the mundane modern soda can, Hammack explains the golden rule of thumb that underlies every new building technique, every technological advancement, and every creative solution that leads us one step closer to a better, more functional world. Spanning centuries and cultures, Hammack offers a fascinating perspective on how humans engineer solutions in a world full of problems.

Thermodynamics is the branch of physics that deals with heat, work, and energy transfer. It provides fundamental principles that govern the behavior of physical systems, from microscopic particles to large-scale industrial processes. Understanding thermodynamics is crucial for fields such as engineering, chemistry, and physics, as it helps explain how energy is conserved, transformed, and dissipated.
One of the fundamental aspects of thermodynamics is the concept of a thermodynamic system, which refers to a specific region of space or a set of substances that are being studied. Systems can be classified as open, closed, or isolated, depending on their ability to exchange energy and matter with their surroundings. An open system allows both energy and matter to flow in and out, while a closed system permits energy transfer but not matter exchange. An isolated system, in contrast, does not exchange either energy or matter with its surroundings.
Thermodynamic properties are categorized as extensive or intensive. Extensive properties, such as mass, volume, and total energy, depend on the amount of substance present. Intensive properties, like temperature, pressure, and density, do not depend on system size and are uniform throughout a system in equilibrium.

Former bookseller, longtime publisher, and author Jon M. Sweeney shows—with history and anecdotes centering around books such as Thoreau's Journal, Tagore's Gitanjali, Martin Buber's Hasidic Tales, and Tolstoy's Twenty-three Tales—what it means to be carried by a book. He explores the discovery that once accompanied finding books, and books finding us. He ponders the smell of an old volume, its heft, and why bibliophiles carry them around even without reading them. He demonstrates how and why there is magic and enchantment that takes place between people and books.
