Sinopse

In "The Winning of the American West," Theodore Roosevelt presents a compelling narrative that chronicles the complex history of the American frontier. Divided into four volumes, the work combines personal anecdote, rigorous historical analysis, and vivid storytelling, reflecting Roosevelt's dynamic prose style. His depiction of the westward expansion encapsulates the triumphs and tribulations faced by settlers, Native Americans, and the evolving American identity during the 19th century. It is an evocative exploration of the intersection between individual initiative and national expansion, highlighting themes such as courage, conflict, and the spirit of adventure that characterize this pivotal era in American history. Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States and a fervent advocate for American nationalism, was deeply influenced by his own experiences in the West. His extensive travels and firsthand encounters with the rugged American landscape and its inhabitants shaped his understanding of the frontier's significance to American character and democracy. This work stands as both a historical document and a testament to Roosevelt's belief in the inherent vitality of the American spirit, greatly influenced by his own challenges and triumphs in life. "The Winning of the American West" is essential reading for anyone seeking to grasp the complexities of American expansion and identity. Roosevelt's incisive insights and vibrant storytelling not only immerse the reader in the historical narrative but also provoke reflection on contemporary American values. This historical epic is a must-have for scholars, enthusiasts of American history, and general readers alike.

In the Socrates Meets series, Peter Kreeft revives the classic method of bringing philosophy to life through dialogue. In eight innovative volumes, he uncovers the principles, assumptions, and sometimes dangerous conclusions of some of history’s most influential minds. Each dialogue imagines a purgatory where we can listen in on conversations between Socrates and the great thinkers who, centuries later, picked up the philosopher’s torch. Each conversation investigates one of the philosopher’s key works, a short, readable classic that raises central questions both for philosophy and for life. In this volume, Socrates cross-examines Søren Kierkegaard, the father of Christian existentialism and author of Philosophical Fragments, exploring imagination, truth, faith, love, and Jesus Christ.

The history of selling sex is a hidden one—and too often its practitioners are pushed to the margins of history. This book redresses the balance, revealing the history of the sex trade through the eyes of sex workers, from medieval streets to Wild West saloons, and from brothels to state bedrooms.

Harlots, Whores & Hackabouts' chapters are structured thematically in a broadly chronological order, each one introducing a lively cast of complex and entertaining characters operating in an array of different periods, locations, and settings. In ancient Mesopotamia, the harlot Shamhat was powerful and respected, able to civilize the wild man Enkidu through her charms. In medieval London, Elizabeth Moryng serviced religious clergy under the guise of an embroidery business, though she was eventually jailed for being a prolific panderer and bawd. In the hedonistic floating world of Edo, Japan, Kabuki actresses and geishas entertained and pleasured their patrons. Lister's engaging and illuminating tales invite listeners to look, listen, and reconsider everything they thought they knew about the world's oldest profession. Together, these captivating tales of sex workers from around the world and throughout history provide a powerful context to contemporary debates about sexuality and the empowerment of women.

The 1988 State of the Union Address delivered January 25, 1988, extols individual rights, the free market, and the value of work, family, and religion, resulting in “the longest peacetime expansion in history”. Reagan stresses unity and common goals, saying there are no Republicans, no Democrats -- just Americans.
“We’re for limited government…”, free trade, a balanced budget, and the line-item veto. “[C]ontrol of our schools belongs to the States, local communities and, most of all, to the parents and teachers.”
“My friends, some years ago, the Federal Government declared war on poverty, and poverty won.” Our 59 major poverty programs have created a dependency trap that wreaks havoc on the family, the support system most needed to escape poverty.
We support a drug-free America, an end to federal funding of abortion, and “believe Congress should pass our school prayer amendment.”
“A creative, competitive America is the answer to a changing world, not trade wars that would close doors, create greater barriers, and destroy millions of jobs. … Protectionism is destructionism. America's jobs, America's growth, America's future depend on trade -- trade that is free, open, and fair.”
“We must … make adequate, stable defense spending a top goal both this year and in the future.” Our “efforts are to give future generations what we never had -- a future free of nuclear terror. Reduction of strategic offensive arms is one step, SDI another. Our funding request for our Strategic Defense Initiative is less than 2 percent of the total defense budget. SDI funding is money wisely appropriated and money well spent.”
We thank God for “this place called America, this shining city on a hill, this government of, by, and for the people. Thank you, and God bless you.”
