The anthology highlights cornerstone issues such as nationalism, diplomacy, and civic duty, bringing to light their nuanced approaches to these perennial themes through emblematic texts that reflect the breadth and depth of their intellectual engagements. Roosevelt, the vigorous statesman and naturalist, alongside Lodge, the astute historian and political theorist, both contributed significantly to early 20th-century American political landscape. Their writings not only address historical and political imperatives of their times but also resonate with contemporary discussions on governance and policy-making, presenting a unique historical continuum. For scholars, students, and enthusiasts of American history and political theory, The Essential Roosevelt Collection offers a unique vantage point into the minds of two influential American leaders. This anthology serves not just as a repository of significant historical documents but as an educational tool that stimulates thoughtful discussion and analysis, encouraging a deeper understanding of the complex interplay between political ideology and practical governance in the United States. The collection invites readers to explore a confluence of ideas that shaped, and continue to inform, American political legacy.

This version of Nature is an 1843 revision to the popular essay written and published in 1836. In the original essay, Emerson put forth the foundation of transcendentalism, and suggested that reality can be understood by studying nature. Within the essay, Emerson divides nature into four usages: Commodity, Beauty, Language and Discipline. These distinctions define how humans use nature for their basic needs, their desire for delight, their communication with one another and their understanding of the world.

A fascinating account of the famous explorer’s voyages through the southern Pacific and Antarctic Oceans, based on firsthand journals and logbooks.

In the mid-18th century, Captain James Cook undertook extraordinary voyages of navigation and maritime exploration to discover the Unknown Southern Continent. He accomplished and encountered much during his three voyages through the uncharted southern waters, yet his Antarctic voyages are perhaps the least studied of all his remarkable travels.

Now James Hamilton’s gripping and scholarly study brings together the stories of Cook’s Antarctic journeys into a single volume. Using Cook’s journals and the logbooks of officers who sailed with him, this volume sets his Antarctic explorations within the context of his historic voyages.

Captain James Cook and the Search for Antarctica offers fascinating insight into Cook the seaman and explorer. The exceptional navigational skills of Cook and his crew are vividly depicted as they survive foul weather across uncharted and inhospitable seas.

In this New York Times Notable Book, the Pulitzer Prize–finalist undertakes his own investigation into the murder of a Guatemalan bishop.Named a Best Book of the Year by the Washington Post Book World, the Chicago Tribune, the Economist, and the San Francisco Chronicle Two days after releasing a groundbreaking church-sponsored report implicating the military in the murders and disappearances of some two hundred thousand Guatemalan civilians, Bishop Juan Gerardi was bludgeoned to death in his garage. Gerardi was the country’s leading human rights activist, but the Church quickly realized it could not rely on police investigators or the legal system to solve the crime. Instead, Church leaders formed their own investigative team: a group of secular young men who called themselves Los Intocables—the Untouchables. Author Francisco Goldman spoke to witnesses no other reporter was able to reach, observing firsthand some of the most crucial developments in this sensational case. Documenting the Latin American reality of mara youth gangs and organized crime, The Art of Political Murder tells the incredible true story of Los Intocables and their remarkable fight for justice. “Becoming by turns a little bit Columbo, Jason Bourne and Seymour Hersh, Goldman gives us the anatomy of a crime while opening a window to a misunderstood neighboring country that is flirting with anarchy.” —The New York Times Book Review

    A New York Times bestseller
A candid, compulsively readable, hilarious, and heartbreaking memoir of resilience and redemption by comedic genius Molly Shannon
At age four, Molly Shannon’s world was shattered when she lost her mother, baby sister, and cousin in a car accident with her father at the wheel. Held together by her tender and complicated relationship with her grieving father, Molly was raised in a permissive household where her gift for improvising and role-playing blossomed alongside the fearlessness that would lead her to become a celebrated actress.
From there, Molly ventured into the wider world of New York and Los Angeles show business, where she created her own opportunities and developed her daring and empathetic comedy. Filled with behind-the-scenes stories involving everyone from Whitney Houston to Adam Sandler to Monica Lewinsky, many told for the first time here, Hello, Molly! spans Molly’s time on Saturday Night Live—where she starred alongside Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, Cheri Oteri, Tracy Morgan, and Jimmy Fallon, among many others. At the same time, it explores with humor and candor her struggle to come to terms with the legacy of her father, a man who both fostered her gifts and drive and was left with the impossible task of raising his kids alone after the loss of her mother.
Witty, winning, and told with tremendous energy and heart, Hello, Molly!, written with Sean Wilsey, sheds new and revelatory light on the life and work of one of our most talented and free-spirited performers.

"I am moved to recall what I can of my early days, what I thought and felt, that grown people may have a better understanding of children and do more for their happiness and development. I see so much tyranny exercised over children, even by well-disposed parents, and in so many varied forms, —a tyranny to which these parents are themselves insensible, —that I desire to paint my joys and sorrows in as vivid colors as possible, in the hope that I may do something to defend the weak from the strong...."
Elizabeth Cady Stanton (1815-1902) was an American suffragist, social activist, abolitionist, and leading figure of the early women's rights movement. Her Declaration of Sentiments, presented at the Seneca Falls Convention held in 1848 in Seneca Falls, New York, is often credited with initiating the first organized women's rights and women's suffrage movements in the United States. Stanton was president of the National Woman Suffrage Association from 1892 until 1900.
