Sinopsis

Theodore Dwight Weld's "American Slavery as It Is" is a seminal work in the abolitionist literature of the 19th century, meticulously cataloging the harsh realities of slavery in the United States. Weld employs a dramatic and persuasive literary style, utilizing vivid anecdotes, firsthand testimonies, and statistical evidence to expose the moral depravity and inhumanity of the institution of slavery. Grounded in the evangelical abolitionist context of the time, the book serves both as a call to action and a poignant indictment of the societal and legal structures that perpetuated this injustice, seeking to awaken the conscience of a nation. Theodore Dwight Weld, a prominent abolitionist and a leading figure in the movement, was deeply influenced by his Quaker upbringing and the Second Great Awakening, both of which emphasized equality and social justice. Weld's direct experiences with slavery, as well as his passionate commitment to the cause, fueled his extensive research and gave rise to this pivotal work. His collaboration with other abolitionists, including his wife, Angelina Grimké, further highlights the collective effort to bring the grim truths of slavery to light. "American Slavery as It Is" is essential reading for anyone seeking to understand the moral fervor that drove the abolitionist movement and the personal sacrifices made in the name of justice. Weld's incisive arguments and thorough documentation not only illuminate the brutal realities of enslaved life, but also inspire contemporary readers to reflect on the legacies of slavery and the enduring struggle for civil rights.

The ancient world was full of many fantastic cities and places, and like today’s major cities, the great ancient cities were hubs of trade, religion, and science. Writing was first invented in ancient cities, and many important scientific discoveries were also made in them, some of which are still used in the modern world. Among the many cities of the ancient world, Rome and Athens may come to mind first, but the city of Babylon in the land of Mesopotamia was already an ancient, venerated city when the others were still inconsequential settlements.
Today, Babylon has become a byword for greed, excess, and licentiousness, mostly due to its mention in the Bible, but a closer examination reveals that Babylon was so much more, and even perhaps the most important city in the ancient world. Ancient Babylon was home to great dynasties that produced some of the world’s most influential leaders, most notably Hammurabi and Nebuchadnezzar, and these rulers invoked their wills on the entire ancient Near East and have been remembered as both progressive and cruel all at the same time. Babylon was also the seat of culture in ancient Mesopotamia and the place where scholars made amazing scientific advances that would not be eclipsed for several centuries. An examination of ancient Babylon demonstrates that it was truly the first great city in the ancient world.
Babylon was also instrumental in the development of the region’s religions, and the religions continue to captivate people for many of the same reasons today’s best known religions and their histories fascinate people. The religion practiced by the ancient Mesopotamians provides a certain mix between the mundane and the surreal, and at the same time aspects of it are both familiar and bizarre to people today. Some find themselves drawn to it based on its preeminent position in religious history as the oldest documented religion in the world.

Anyone who has waited in a Christmas line for the Walnut Room's Great Tree can attest that Chicago's loyalty to Marshall Field's is fierce.

Dayton-Hudson even had to take out advertising around town to apologize for changing the Field's hallowed green bags. And with good reason—the store and those who ran it shaped the city's streets, subsidized its culture, and heralded its progress. The resulting commercial empire dictated wholesale tradeterms in Calcutta and sponsored towns in North Carolina, but its essence was always Chicago. So when the Marshall Field name was retired in 2006 after the stores were purchased by Macy's, protest slogans like "Field's is Chicago" and "Field's: as Chicago as it gets" weren't just emotional hype. Many still hope that name will be resurrected like the city it helped support during the Great Fire and the Great Depression. Until then, fans of Marshall Field's can celebrate its history with this warm look back at the beloved institution.
