Sinopsis

The insistent theme of Mr. Dreiser's work is desire, perennial, unquenchable. No matter how badly Mr. Dreiser might do his work, he would be significant as the American novelist who has most felt this subterranean current of life. Many novelists have seen this current as a mere abyss of sin from which the soul is to be dragged to the high ground of moral purpose and redemption, but this will not quite do. The great interpreters see life as a struggle between this desire and the organized machinery of existence, but they are not eager, as we are, to cover up and belittle the desire.

Applications were neither submitted nor approved, but somehow, they ended up investigating things. She, a walking contradiction of intuition and distraction, claims to have once solved a crime via sandwich. He, precise to the point of paralysis, keeps detailed logs of spontaneous incidents, just in case.
Their cases rarely begin where they should: a bakery blacklisted by birds, a museum that swaps its exhibits at night, a missing person last seen inside a mailbox. Each mystery offers less clarity than the one before, yet they persist, half out of duty, half out of boredom, and perhaps, a little curiosity about each other.
He wants answers. She wants the better question. The universe, unbothered by either, hands them clues wrapped in riddles, teacups, and performance art. In the end, things are only ever partially resolved. But they’re resolved with style.

"What grips readers is the enormous amount of emotion [Fossum] works up as we get closer and closer to reliving the murderous event in question . . . Hell Fire is close to heartbreaking, and there are not many novels, thrillers or otherwise, you can say that about." —Los Angeles Times

A gruesome tableau awaits Inspector Konrad Sejer in the oppressive summer heat: a woman and a young boy lay dead in a pool of blood near a dank trailer. The motivation behind the deaths of Bonnie Hayden and her five-year-old son, Simon, is mysterious—there is no sign of robbery. Who would brutally stab a defenseless woman and her child? In a parallel story, another mother, Mass Malthe, navigates life with her adult son, Eddie. It's a relationship some would call too close, since Eddie's father, a man he obsesses over, abandoned them many years ago. As Sejer searches for the truth behind the seemingly senseless killings, Hell Fire deftly probes why we lie to those closest to us, and what drives people to commit the most horrific of crimes.
