EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK

Thomas Edward Patrick Brady, Jr. was born on August 3, 1977, in San Mateo, California. The only son and youngest child of Tom Sr. and Galyn Brady, Tom Jr. grew up with three older sisters, all of whom excelled at sports. As a child, Tom cheered his sisters on at their softball, soccer, and basketball games, and they imparted to him their competitive spirit.

Tom also cheered on the San Francisco 49ers – in fact, the Brady family is said to have attended every 49ers home game they could manage. One of Tom's more notable childhood memories is attending the 1981 NFC Championship Game and witnessing "The Catch," Joe Montana's iconic touchdown pass to Dwight Clark. A devout Joe Montana fan, Tom has spoken publicly about his admiration for the 49ers quarterback. "I'll never be in Joe's category," said Brady after a recent football game, despite having just overtaken Montana on the career passing touchdown list.

A multisport athlete at San Mateo's Juniper Serro High School, Tom Brady stood out on the football field as a quarterback. Passing for 3,702 yards and 31 touchdowns during his high school career, Tom caught the eye of the coaches of the University of Michigan football team.

Tom also excelled as his high school baseball team’s catcher. What many people don't realize is that he was good enough at baseball for the Montreal Expos to draft him in the 18th round of the 1995 Major League Baseball draft. The football world would have looked quite a bit different if Tom hadn't passed on baseball and instead accepted a scholarship to play football at Michigan.

While at Michigan, Tom rode the bench for two years until finally earning the starting quarterback job in his junior year. Despite being an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection his junior year, Tom was drafted as the 199th pick in the sixth round of the 2000 National Football League Draft by the New England Patriots.

An illuminating and witty dialogue with one of the greatest intellectual figures of the twentieth century. Ramin Jahanbegloo's interview with Isaiah Berlin grew into a series of five conversations which offer an intimate view of Berlin and his ideas. They include discussions on pluralism and liberty as well as the thinkers and writers who influenced Berlin. This revised edition provided an excellent introduction to Berlin's thought. Ramin Jahanbegloo is an Iranian philosopher, who has taught in Europe and North America. In 2006 he was imprisoned for several months in Iran. He is currently teaching Political Philosophy at Toronto University. 'Though like Our Lord and Socrates he does not publish much, he thinks and says a great deal and has had an enormous influence on our times'. Maurice Bowra 'Berlin never talks down to the interviewer. Conversations here means the minds of the interviewed and interviewer meet on equal terms in language that is transparently clear, informed, witty and entertaining'. Stephen Spender 'He is wise without seeming pompous, witty without seeming trivial, affectionate without seeming sentimental'. Michael Ignatieff 'Isaiah Berlin... has for fifty years in this talkative and quarrelsome city (Oxford) been something special, admired by all and disliked by no-one... a benevolent super-don'.
