Sinopsis

In "Essay on the Creative Imagination," Th. Ribot explores the complex interplay between creativity and human psychology, delving into the processes that underpin our imaginative capabilities. Through a rigorous blend of empirical analysis and philosophical inquiry, Ribot examines the role of the imagination in artistic creation and mental functioning, navigating through various contexts of psychological thought in the 19th century. His nuanced literary style seamlessly marries scientific precision with philosophical depth, making the text both accessible and intellectually stimulating for readers interested in psychology and aesthetics. Th. Ribot, a pioneering figure in the field of psychology, was greatly influenced by the emerging scientific discourse of his time, particularly the intersection of psychology and art. His background in philosophy and psychology, coupled with a desire to understand the processes of creative thought, led him to publish this seminal work. Ribot was driven by an ambition to bridge the gap between abstract theory and the lived experience of creativity, making significant contributions to our understanding of human cognition. Readers intrigued by the forces of creativity, the nature of imagination, and their psychological underpinnings will find Ribot's essay to be an indispensable resource. This text stands not only as an important work in psychological literature but also as a thought-provoking guide for artists, psychologists, and general readers alike, inviting them to reflect on the essence of creative expression.

Dave Ferman is a former high school English and science teacher, and a communications executive in the world's largest defense corporation. In 1956, he completed a tour as a U.S. Marine Grunt, a drill instructor, a military policeman, and a pilot. He also served in Sixth Fleet Air Intelligence with a clandestine atom bomber squadron in the Mediterranean Theatre, and on the West Bank and volatile "Green Line" between Israel and the Kingdom of Jordan. Along the way, he earned a succession of hard-to-get, easy-to-lose top U.S. security clearances that make him among the most highly vetted rookie authors in literature today. Uncle Sam trusts Dave Ferman.
While growing up in urban Kansas during the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, World War II and the birth of Rock 'n' Roll, Dave had several unrelated but pleasant paranormal experiences. Curious and wishing for encores at age five, in denial at age 10, and comfortably nonjudgemental until age 44 when his deceased father visited Dave one evening during a period of extreme financial stress to assure him: “Don’t worry, son. Everything is going to be alright.“ and very soon it was. After that, Dave became a converted believer in some form of life after death. What other choices did he have?
Dave’s message is twofold: “Don’t despair, if all goes well, you and your departed loved ones will be reunited in the hereafter,“ and “I am no longer afraid to die; and you should not be, either.“

    Mothercare - On Obligation Love...

Brilliantly original novelist and cultural critic Lynne Tillman became one of nearly 53 million Americans who care for a sick family member when her mother developed an unusual and little understood condition called Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus.

Instantly, Tillman's independent and spirited mother went from someone she knew to someone else, a woman entirely dependent on her children—an eleven-year process through which her mother underwent many surgeries and some misdiagnoses, while the family navigated consultations and confrontations with doctors, adjusting to the complexity of her cognitive issues, including memory loss.

With her notoriously exquisite writing style and reputation as a "rich noticer of strange things" (Colm Toíbín), Tillman describes, without flinching, the unexpected, heartbreaking, and frustrating years of caring for a sick parent.

Mothercare is both a cautionary tale and sympathetic guidance for anyone who suddenly becomes a caregiver, responsible for the life of another—a parent, loved or not, or a friend. This story may be helpful, informative, consoling, or upsetting, but it never fails to underscore how impossible it is to get the job done completely right.

  • America’s Deadliest Hurricanes: The History of the Three Worst Hurricanes in American History - cover

    America’s Deadliest Hurricanes:...

Hurricanes have been devastating communities for thousands of years, bringing about various combinations of rain and wind that can do everything from taking down some dead limbs to wiping out houses. They are also common enough that people who live for any length of time in a region prone to having hurricanes are inclined to accept them as something of a periodic nuisance rather than a serious danger. Modern construction styles allow houses to withstand winds in excess of 100 miles an hour, and early warning systems allow people to evacuate. Thus, most hurricanes of the 21st century take fewer lives than a serious highway accident.
As a result, the world watched in horror as Hurricane Katrina decimated New Orleans in August 2005, and the calamity seemed all the worse because many felt that technology had advanced far enough to prevent such tragedies, whether through advanced warning or engineering. Spawning off the Bahamian coast that month, Katrina quickly grew to be one of the deadliest natural disasters in American history, killing more than 1,800 people and flooding a heavy majority of one of America’s most famous cities. At first, the storm seemed to be harmless, scooting across the Floridian coast as a barely noticeable Category 1 storm, but when Katrina reached the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, its winds grew exponentially before slamming into the southern Louisiana coast as a massive Category 5 hurricane. In addition to the deadly nature of the hurricane, it was also incredibly destructive as a result of failed levees around the New Orleans area. By the time the storm had passed, it had wreaked an estimated $108 billion of damage across the region, and the human suffering, with nearly 2,000 deaths and a million people displaced, was available for viewing across the world.

The aspects of Anne Boleyn's life and death are fiercely debated by historians, yet her ladies-in-waiting remain an understudied topic. Much emphasis is usually put on Anne's relationships with the men in her life: her suitors, her royal husband, her father and brother, and her putative lovers who were executed on May 17, 1536. By concentrating on a previously neglected area of Anne Boleyn's female household, this book seeks to identify the women who served Anne and investigate what roles ladies-in-waiting played in this Queen's household.
