Sinopse

Pickling Growth unveils the captivating story of pickling, an ancient food preservation method that has profoundly impacted global cuisines and trade. More than just a technique, pickling has acted as a catalyst for cultural exchange. Imagine how the simple act of preserving cucumbers, cabbage, or even eggs could facilitate exploration and shape regional foodways. From ancient Mesopotamia to modern kitchens, pickling’s journey is one of innovation and adaptation.

The book explores pickling's historical development across cultures, delving into the scientific principles that make it work, such as fermentation and acidity. It also showcases how pickling techniques have been used in diverse culinary applications, from Asian kimchi to European sauerkraut. By combining historical analysis, scientific explanations, and culinary explorations, Pickling Growth offers a unique perspective on this transformative practice.

Beginning with fundamental pickling concepts, the book progresses through historical development, scientific principles, and culinary applications, providing a comprehensive understanding of its impact.

The culture of contempt—the lust to wound perceived opponents who are seen not just as wrong but as evil—has become global in scope. Fed by the rise of “cheap speech” in media, seismic shifts in digital technology, and a boom industry based on selling outrage, people are increasingly unable to understand, much less dialogue with, their ideological rivals. The Catholic Church understands itself as the evangelizer of culture; yet this culture of contempt has evangelized much of the Church. A distressing range of Catholic media platforms and commentators have introduced the poison of contempt into the heart of Catholic life—and with exacting fidelity. In this timely and important new book, Vatican journalist and Crux Editor John L. Allen Jr. offers a bracing analysis of our fractured Catholic media landscape. Examining six case studies of the culture of contempt wounding the Church—four from around the globe, and two from the United States—Allen offers not only a sobering look at the direction Catholic media has headed, but an urgent call for it to change course.

Did you know that Shah Jahan once planned to build another Taj Mahal in his empire?
The Taj Mahal is renowned for its exceptional architecture that infuses elements from various influences around the world, including the magnificence of Mughal, Persian, and Islamic architectural styles.
Shah Jahan, the reigning emperor of the Mughal Empire, had been plagued with sadness following the death of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. And so, as a parting gift to her, the mourning emperor commissioned the construction of a grand mausoleum made of white marble.
Upon completion, the Taj Mahal stood on the banks of the Yamuna River, impressing those who gazed at its marvelous façade glimmering under the bright sun. A reflective pool enhanced its perfections, but it was the mausoleum’s symmetrical design that captivated many. The symmetry could be seen in each corner of the complex except for Mumtaz Mahal’s extravagant tomb chamber—the symmetrical design was broken when Shah Jahan’s cenotaph was added years later.
Some said it was intentional, while others claimed Shah Jahan never intended to be buried beside his wife. Legend has it that the emperor was planning to build another mausoleum for himself that mirrored the Taj Mahal; it was to be placed across from the Taj Mahal and made of black marble. However, whether this is true remains a debate. Ancient sources contradict each other, which can be confusing for curious readers.
But that is about to change. With this all-new history audiobook, you can easily explore the gripping events that led to the construction of the Seven Wonders of the New World.

Her characters are drawn from life, and her subjects, not only the experiences that change our lives suddenly, but also those that shape us over long periods and come to define memory.

A radical transformation in the psyche itself," 8 November 1968. Duration: 80 minutes. To communicate we must know that the word is not the thing and also be in that state of mind whose quality is attention, care. That can take place only if we are serious. We are the world, and the world is us. To bring about a radical transformation, which is so essential in society, there must be radical transformation in ourselves.Analysis of violence does not end violence, nor is violence ended by thinking of nonviolence. There is no teacher outside, no saviour, no master; you yourself have to change, and therefore you have to learn to observe, to know yourself.Knowledge and learning are two different things. What is this silence you talk about? The silence that I am experiencing comes and goes."Thought is the cause of fear," 10 November 1968. Duration: 76 minutes.Though we have plenty of energy, apparently we lack the drive, enthusiasm, vitality to bring about a change in ourselves. As long as there is fear, there must be violence, aggression, anger, hatred. Thought is the source of fear.Is it possible to live everyday life without thought interfering?

Peter Kreeft, esteemed philosophy professor and author of over eighty books, has taught college philosophy for sixty years. Throughout those decades, he yearned for a beginner's philosophy text that was clear, accessible, enjoyable, and exciting (perhaps even funny). Finding none that met those criteria, he eventually decided to write it himself. In this four-volume series, Kreeft delivers, with his characteristic wit and clarity, an introduction to philosophy via the hundred greatest philosophers of all time. Socrates’ Children examines the big ideas of four major eras―ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary―and immerses the reader in the “great conversation,” the ongoing dialogue among the great thinkers of history, including the most influential philosopher of all: Socrates, the father of Western philosophy. Volume II: Medieval Philosophers studies the transformation of philosophy that came about due to an unprecedented figure―Jesus Christ―and considers the philosophers of the great monotheistic religions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam as they sought to marry the Greek philosophical tradition with divine revelation.
