Sinopsis

Cooking Without Fire presents a compelling exploration of early human nutrition, challenging the long-held belief that fire was the sole catalyst for human evolution. By diving into raw food diets and fermentation techniques, the book uncovers how our ancestors ingeniously accessed essential nutrients and preserved food. It highlights that raw foods contain active enzymes that aid digestion and boost nutrient absorption, while fermentation not only preserves food but also generates vital nutrients and detoxifies harmful substances.

The book progresses by first introducing the fundamental concepts of raw food nutrition and the science behind fermentation, supported by paleobotanical and archaeological evidence. It then details the development of these techniques through various stages of hominin evolution, showcasing specific examples of fermented foods and their impact on early human health.

Finally, it explores the lasting impact of these practices, investigating links to the human microbiome and offering practical applications for modern diets. This approach provides readers with a unique perspective on human evolution, emphasizing the importance of raw food preparation and fermented foods alongside traditional cooking methods. This culinary history also offers practical applications for incorporating these ancient techniques into modern diets, such as fermenting vegetables and preparing raw food dishes. By integrating perspectives from anthropology, microbiology, and nutritional science, Cooking Without Fire provides a nuanced understanding of early human dietary habits and their lasting effects.

Through the centuries, succession to the English throne has largely been dictated by blood. Children were born to the role, their destinies entwined with that of the nation. They would be raised with the expectation that they would eventually take their place on the throne and rule the land. But not all those expected to wear the crown completed this journey.

Ashley Mantle explores the lives of several heirs apparent, from the Norman Conquest to the present day, who were destined to assume the throne of England but, for one reason or another, did not. You will meet such figures as Robert Curthose, eldest son of William the Conqueror, whose ineptitude saw him twice barred from the crown; Edward V, whose disappearance in 1483 still remains a mystery; Lady Jane Grey, the tragic Nine Days Queen; and Sophia, Electress of Hanover, who died months before her accession. Along the way we will explore the nature of rule to determine what was expected of an heir and how an heir was groomed in preparation for their ascent, as well as how the rules surrounding the succession have changed over the centuries.

The Twelve Keys of Basil Valentine is a widely reproduced alchemical book attributed to Basil Valentine. It was first published in 1599 by Johann Thölde who is likely the book's true author. It is presented as a sequence of alchemical operations encoded allegorically in words, to which images have been added. The first Basil Valentine book to discuss the keys is Ein kurtz summarischer Tractat, von dem grossen Stein der Uralten ("A Short Summary Tract: Of the great stone of the ancients"), 1599. The first part of the book is a discussion of general alchemical principles and advice about the philosopher's stone. The second half of Ein kurtz summarischer Tractat, under the subtitle "The Twelve Keys", contains twelve short chapters. Each chapter, or "key", is an allegorical description of one step in the process by which the philosopher's stone may be created. With each step, the symbolic names (Deckname, or code name) used to indicate the critical ingredients are changed, just as the ingredients themselves are transformed. The keys are written in such a fashion as to conceal as well as to illuminate: only a knowledgeable reader or alchemical adept was expected to correctly interpret the veiled language of the allegorical text and its related images. Alchemy.

Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Award Finalist
Every adoption is rooted in loss.
Adoption is often framed by happy narratives, but the reality is that many adoptees struggle with unaddressed trauma and issues of identity and belonging. Adoptees often spend the majority of their youth without the language to explore the grief related to adoption or the permission to legitimize their conflicting emotions.
Adoptee and counselor Cameron Lee Small names the realities of the adoptee's journey, narrating his own and other adoptees' stories in all their complexity. He unpacks the history of how adoption has worked and names how the church influenced adoption practices with unintended negative impacts on adoptees' faith. Small's own tumultuous search for and reunion with his mother in Korea inspired him to help other adoptees navigate what it means to carry multiple stories. His adoptee-centered advocacy helps adoptees regain their agency and identity on a journey of integration and healing, with meaningful relationships in all their family systems.
