Beschreibung

Humor abounding, the stories of High on the Vine feature thrice-removed cousins, Tami & Evi Maki, who often contemplate how their lives would be vastly different, if only they did not bear the burden of marriage to Toivo and Eino. Always shirking responsibility, the two spousal reprobates tend to work as little as humanly possible and gamble beyond their means. When Toivo and Eino do win a "pot" they pass along a share of the booty to their wives with an all-expense paid trip to someplace "exotic." While this may bring a tropical paradise to mind, it turns out to be a survival wilderness weekend in the dead of winter in the middle of nowhere. Tami & Evi punish their husbands with a hostile takeover of the boys' hunting camp. From there they explore many entrepreneurial adventures, including a "rustic" vacation rental, an Amish-run chicken ranch, and a winery operated by a group of misogynistic monks who turn out a product known as "Monk Juice." While the bottom line for Tami and Evi is always murky, the various ventures they pursue are even murkier. "Terri Martin gets to show off her propensity for puns the best when Evi gets drunk at their weekly 'teatime' which starts with boxed wine and ends with her passing out, most often. If you like a good chuckle about Yooper foibles and follies, I highly recommend High on the Vine by Terri Martin. -- Victor Volkman, Marquette Monthly "Readers should rejoice that all the stories now appear in one book and follow the cousins (thrice removed) from considering raising fish in a swimming pool to vacationing on a beach with a Pina Colada in hand and the Atlantic Ocean spread before them. The book is filled with grins, giggles, and out-loud laughter." Tom Powers, Michigan in Books

In this latest installment of Alexander McCall Smith’s beloved No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, Mma Ramotswe and Mma Makutsi take on an intriguing new case and uncover surprising truths.

In the rolling hills just outside Gaborone, surrounded by a grove of acacia trees, lies the Great Hippopotamus Hotel. With spacious rooms overlooking the Botswanan countryside and a fine and loyal staff, the hotel has served as a refuge to weary travelers for many years. But a sudden string of misfortunes threatens to ruin the hotel’s reputation. Food poisoning befalls an unlucky diner, laundry mysteriously disappears from the drying line, and a scorpion stings one of the guests. Mishap after mishap occurs, until it becomes apparent that these incidents are more than simple coincidences—something foul is afoot.

Mma Ramotswe and Mma Makutsi are on the case to find out who could be responsible for these unfortunate events. Meanwhile, one of Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni’s most important clients has asked him to source a sports car, putting him in a ticklish position, as the man’s wife seems to be unaware of the purchase, and the client is taking great pains to keep it that way.

With a healthy dose of good humor and kindness, Mma Ramotswe and her associates must help restore the reputation of the hotel and prove that even the most difficult situations can be remedied with honesty and compassion.

Though celebrated playwright Wendy Wasserstein was firmly rooted in New York's cultural life, her appeal is universal. Shiksa Goddess collects her urbane, inspiring, and deeply empathetic essays, all written when she was in her forties, and all infused with her trademark irreverent humor. The full range of Wasserstein' s mid-life obsessions are covered in this eclectic collection— everything from Chekhov, politics, and celebrity to family, fashion, and real estate. Whether fretting over her figure, discovering her gentile roots, or writing tenderly about her very Jewish mother and her own daughter— born when Wendy was forty-eight and single— Wasserstein reveals the full, dizzying life of a shiksa goddess with unabashed candor and inimitable style.

Neighboring small towns, Coon Creek and Golden Springs, Ohio, enter their own little war, and may never be the same after the coming Fourth of July celebration.
Coon Creek, a conservative, industrial, blue-collar town, has seen better days. Golden Springs is home to Antaeus College, a private institution with a tradition of liberal politics. No love lost between those two.
Mazie Tuttle, a professional dog walker, knows both towns well. Born and raised in Coon Creek, she enrolls in the Antaeus College summer literary program being taught by the famous radical novelist and pie lover, Roscoe Alolo. As tensions flare between the two towns over a statue of Coon Creek’s founding father standing in the town’s square, one act of vandalism follows another, and Mazie increasingly feels caught in the middle of the hostilities.
Groups in both towns plot to disrupt the other’s Fourth of July celebration. On one side, the schemers include Mazie’s brother, her ex-boyfriend turned drug dealer, and a Methodist minister who’s running for mayor. On the other, Professor Alolo urges his class to take action to “liberate” Coon Creekers.
Sooner or later, Mazie will have to take a side. She just doesn’t know which she’ll choose.

The story centers around Treddleford, who seeks solace in a book while trying to avoid the incessant chatter of Amblecope, a loquacious fellow club member. As Treddleford attempts to immerse himself in poetry, Amblecope interrupts with his own anecdotes about sports and personal exploits, revealing his tendency to dominate conversations. Treddleford cleverly deflects Amblecope's attempts at engagement by sharing exaggerated and absurd tales of his own
