They come from the smoky depths of Hell’s Pit. Remnants of the shattered Pious Legion, these hateful castoffs of Earth’s Roman Empire, seek to conquer. Armed with maddening gas, Maximinus Thrax’s airships swarm the skies like vengeful locusts, reducing entire populations to ash.
For Boudica, the forgotten Queen of the Iceni, it’s a familiar fate. Having failed against Nero on Earth, her civilization was wiped from history due to her backfired efforts of liberation.
As Thrax’s assault eliminates the peaceful enclaves of New Dis, what can the failed warrior queen do to protect her city, the innocent peoples within, and her beloved friends? The Pythagorean Cult, founded by the ancient Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras, stands as one of the most mysterious and intriguing movements in history. Emerging in the 6th century BCE, it blended religious, philosophical, and scientific ideals into a unique and complex system that shaped the intellectual landscape of ancient Greece. At the heart of the cult was the figure of Pythagoras, revered as a divine being by his followers. His teachings, rooted in the belief that numbers and mathematics governed the universe, attracted a dedicated group of adherents who sought enlightenment and understanding of the natural and spiritual world.
Pythagoras’s teachings extended far beyond the realms of geometry and mathematics. His philosophy emphasized harmony, proportion, and balance, both in the cosmos and within the individual. The Pythagoreans viewed numbers not only as abstract symbols but as the very essence of reality. Everything, from the movements of the stars to the music of the spheres, was thought to be governed by mathematical principles. This belief in the fundamental nature of numbers formed the cornerstone of the cult's worldview, setting them apart from other philosophical schools of thought at the time.
In addition to their intellectual pursuits, the Pythagoreans practiced a strict code of conduct that demanded both physical and spiritual discipline. Their lifestyle was based on a set of moral and ethical principles, which included dietary restrictions, meditation, and an unwavering commitment to silence and contemplation. This approach aimed at achieving spiritual purity, with the ultimate goal of transcending the limitations of the physical body and achieving union with the divine. Pythagoras himself was seen as both a teacher and a spiritual guide, and his followers believed he possessed an almost supernatural understanding of the world.

Discover some of the world's most awe-inspiring and holy places, from Stonehenge to Uluru, and Walden Pond to Angkor Wat.

Humans have always searched for and created meaning in the world around them, whether in breathtakingly stunning natural features and phenomena, acknowledging the ancient home of a particular faith or movement, or honouring the location of a significant event. In this beautifully illustrated guide, Alice Peck discusses what makes a place spiritual – whether reaches of time, geography, the provision of sustenance or inspiration, or mystery and magic – and then explores 80 such locations around the globe. Rather than a comprehensive travel guide, the description of each one includes a detail or tip – something beautiful, strange, relatively unknown or unfamiliar – to allow readers to deepen their focus and perhaps experience the place in a different way than they might expect. If you are unable to travel at this time, this book will help you plan your next adventure. And if you are trying to limit your carbon footprint, each destination is accompanied by a related meditation, prayer, practice or quotation to help you connect to the spirit of it from your own home.
