As part of the challenge he has set himself, he is working and hitching his way across to Italy, not having brought any cash or cards to finance his journey.Annabel is on her way back via Nice, to Monaco, after a gruelling business trip. She drives a top of the range red jaguar car.Annabel, on route from Nice airport, feeling exhausted and worried she might fall asleep at the wheel, parks in the car park at the start of the Promenade des Anglais, to take fresh air before driving on to Monaco.Robert is sleeping as a tramp under the promenade.Prostitutes are using the car park as a base in order to serve the airport trade.When Annabel is mugged she screams for help and is rescued by Robert.  Robert thinks she is a prostitute and she thinks he is an alcoholic tramp.  Subsequently, they sit together and as they converse, they warm to each other, but they don't expect their meeting to be more than a passing of two ships in the night.  But later they make love in her Jaguar.  They part, but don’t realise they have fallen in love.  The story shows how they get back together

  Footprints

  Footprints are a collection of poems that were either written or revised recently or recalled from work begun and lost fifty years before. Some recall pleasant memories of my beloved Veronica and some of her later struggles with ill health. She was born and grew up in Dublin and Ireland remained a special place for both of us. The DART from Howth to Greystones "tunnels under Queen V's crown and pops out for the view above Killiney Bay" where "the magic face of Ireland is found." We met and married in Syracuse. Events and places from that time are featured in some of the poems. Newtown Plus Five was written shortly after news coverage of the fifth anniversary of the Sandy Hook school massacre. An Elegy for One and Many commemorates the life of a friend of the victims of the Pittsburgh synagogue rampage who died during the same period of time. Many of the poems are written in traditional verse forms and rhyme schemes. 
  A number of poems reflect concerns about America: the face it presents to the world and the state of its democracy. Ode from a Colonial Bowl recounts a family history of its founding. 
  Flint where "once-upon-a-time America coursed through (its) leaden arteries to nurse its middle class." In Vietnam "we've grown old, some fifty years removed from when our universe was rolled into a white-hot ball," to find the common threads we shared in youth to pursue our common legacy. American Graffiti asks, "Can Cicero and Caesar coexist within republican constraint?" 
  Let Freedom Ring calls upon us to answer "the distant bells of freedom pealing " in Ukraine. The challenge is to understand how both poems can be compatible in our logic.

  In the volumes of this series we take a look through the prism of individual regions of the United States through the centuries and decades. 
   
  The United States may be many things: the world’s policeman, a bully, a shameless purveyor of mass market culture but it also, in its better moments, a standard bearer for truth, transparency, equality and the more positive qualities of democracy. 
   
  Little wonder that’s its poets are rightly acknowledged as wonders of their art.  Leading lights in the fight against slavery and for equality, even if the rest of the Nation is finding it problematic to catch up.
