Sinopsis

This book has been written to meet the requirements of amateur gardeners who need guidance as to the various methods of growing mushrooms for home consumption. It contains a wealth of information, supplied in a concise and lucid manner, on the culture of the mushroom on ridges or beds in the open air, in boxes and tubs in cellars, under greenhouse staging, in old hotbeds or in frames and also in pastures. This book was originally published in 1909 but all of its content is important and still valuable today. We are republishing it here with a new introduction on mushroom identification and foraging.

How do the spaces we inhabit affect us—and reflect us? A Pulitzer Prize–winning author explores architecture, in this insightful, “breezy” read (The Washington Post). In 1981, Alison Lurie published The Language of Clothes, a meditation on costume and fashion as an expression of history, social status and individual psychology. Amusing, enlightening and full of literary allusion, the book was highly praised and widely anthologized. Now Lurie has returned with a companion book, The Language of Houses, a lucid, provocative and entertaining look at how the architecture of buildings and the spaces within them both reflect and affect the people who inhabit them. Schools, churches, government buildings, museums, prisons, hospitals, restaurants, and of course, houses and apartments—all of them speak to human experience in vital and varied ways. The Language of Houses discusses historical and regional styles and the use of materials such as stone and wood and concrete, as well as contemplating the roles of stairs and mirrors, windows and doors, tiny rooms and cathedral-like expanses, illustrating its conclusions with illuminating literary references and the comments of experts in the field. Accompanied by lighthearted original drawings, The Language of Houses is an essential and highly entertaining new contribution to the literature of modern architecture.

“A candid story of desperate measures, explosive humor, and, ultimately, the sanity behind seeming madness. It teaches a new understanding of family love.” —Jo Radner, reviewer for the National Storytelling Network’s magazine

Family: comfort food or a recipe for disaster? Award-winning storyteller and performer Regi Carpenter brings her humor and honesty to print in Where There’s Smoke, There’s Dinner.

Regi is the youngest daughter in a family that pulsates with contradictions: religious and raucous, tender but terrible, unfortunate yet irrepressible. These honest tales—some hilarious, some heartbreaking—celebrate the glorious and gut-wrenching lives of four generations of Carpenters raised on the Saint Lawrence River in Clayton, New York. From teenagers struggling to find their identity to disabled veterans grappling with the aftermath of war and change to the complications and sweetness of love between family members, this collection of linked short stories holds the universal message that life’s difficulties are softened by love and fortitude . . . and family.

“Inventive, insightful, emotionally nuanced in the midst of deadpan humor; but more than that, here is a great, big-hearted embrace of the world.” —Loren Niemi, producer, Two Chairs Telling

“This book brings us to a place where we discover the eventual and abiding power of love over death. It is so very loving and affirming of total recovery from childhood and of the power of forgiveness that heals in two directions.” —Donald Davis, author of Tales from a Free-Range Childhood

You don’t have to be Jewish to love My Shorts. But it doesn’t hurt!
Think David Sedaris meets Nora Efron meets Ralph from The Christmas Story.
An uproarious collection of true stories featuring a chubby Cheetos-loving Jewish middle child with overactive sweat glands and an abundant imagination. His tendency towards mischief and twisting the truth complicates grappling with issues of childhood, family, relationships, sexuality, and a hunger to be accepted. From lusting for a BB gun, accidentally setting the family shed on fire, to his “first time” . . . every one of Brian’s stories will make you giggle and feel the nostalgic joy of the messy, hilarious, and poignant journey we call life.
Written with a fresh and honest voice blending humor, Americana culture, and “it’s like I’m right there in the ’60s” scenes and vivid dialogue, My Shorts delivers life lessons that stick with you long after reading. Brian’s stories remind you that no matter what, never forget to laugh.
Sit down with your Black & White Cookie and a glass of milk with Fox's u-bet and enjoy the ride.

So many gardening books tell you what to plant and where and when. But how often do they tell you to just sit and enjoy them? And when you do, you can find yourself thinking of things in a different way. With an exceptional academic career in natural history and medicine, writer Joanna Geyer-Kordesch found 'reflection, consolation and healing' in the soothing, healing powers of gardens after suffering from a major stroke. Sharing profound reflections on how gardening has helped her regenerate, Why Gardens Matter is as enlightening as it is inspirational. With contributions from Donald Smith, this is a powerful plea for us to reflect on our gardens and to acknowledge the life-affirming values of our green spaces.
