  The early formation of Kilwa was not the result of a single event but rather a gradual process influenced by its strategic geographic location. This advantageous position allowed Kilwa to evolve from a modest trading outpost into a bustling urban center, where economic opportunities attracted people from far and wide. 
  As the trade networks expanded, so did the cultural exchange. The integration of Islamic traditions played a significant role in shaping the identity of the nascent city-state. Early Muslim traders and scholars brought with them not only the teachings of Islam but also innovative approaches to governance, education, and law. This infusion of new perspectives blended with existing local customs, creating a unique cultural synthesis that became characteristic of the Swahili coast. Over time, the fusion of indigenous and foreign elements fostered a distinct identity, one that celebrated both its African roots and the influences of distant lands.

  Edward Estlin Cummings (October 14, 1894 - September 3, 1962), commonly known as e e cummings, was an American poet, painter, essayist, author, and playwright. During World War I, he worked as an ambulance driver and was imprisoned in an internment camp, which provided the basis for his 1922 novel The Enormous Room. The following year he published his first collection of poetry. Cummings wrote approximately 2,900 poems and is often regarded as one of the most important American poets of the 20th century. He is associated with modernist free-form poetry, and much of his work uses idiosyncratic syntax and lower-case spellings for poetic expression. In the following recordings, Cummings reads his poems "somewhere i have never travelled,gladly beyond" (1931), "next to of course god america i" (1926), "anyone lived in a pretty how town" (1940), "Buffalo Bill's (1920), "in Just–" (1920), i carry your heart with me(i carry it in)" (1952). The final audio clip is from a 1955 Cummings speech, "A Poet's Advice to Students."

  The Great American West is a series that was originally done on radio narrated by Jeff Tracy and Berry Burks. 
   
  Jeff Tracy’s radio career started in college and is still going on to this day. Jeff has hosted seven different syndicated shows, covering, Horses, rodeo, history, BBQ and golf. Jeff appears on television as The Cowboy Cook and has appeared in movies. 
   
  Berry has one of the most iconic voices in radio with a career of over 35 years. From Texas and Oklahoma, over to Indiana then to the West coast Berry is one of the best story tellers in the business. 
   
  The voice of Dallas McKennon is featured in this series. Dallas played Cincinnatus on the Daniel Boone show with Fess Parker. Dallas also voiced hundreds of characters for Walt Disney and acted in dozens of movies and TV shows. 
   
  In each episode of The Great American West, we explore the facts, myths and the fiction about significant events or historical figures in our western heritage. You’ll hear stories about Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson, Jesse James, Bell Star, Annie Oakley and many others. The stories were written by a group of ex-Hollywood writers and American West history experts. The Great American West stories were written only with facts and no theory. These stories were crafted prior to the advent of the internet, meaning they had to read books, periodicals and transcripts. The idea was to let the listener make up their own minds. 
   
  Our fine cadre of writers was headed by our lead writer, Patty Sprigg, who wrote for NBC television, The Daniel Boone and Disney shows among others. Nancy Bacon who wrote for NBC and David Nivens Four Star Productions. Rounding out our stable of writers was Ted Bryant, news anchor, political analyst and historical scholar.

  Marcus Garvey (August 17, 1887 - June 10, 1940) was a charismatic Jamaican-born political leader, publisher, journalist, entrepreneur, and orator. He organized the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA-ACL) and acted as its President-General. In 1916 he moved to New York City where his prominence grew. By 1919 he was considered to be the “Black Moses,” and he claimed a following of over 2 million people. This recording is from a speech he gave in the 1920s.
