Sinopse

T. S. Eliot's "The Waste Land" is a groundbreaking modernist poem that delves into the disillusionment and fragmentation of post-World War I society. With its innovative structure, combining a multitude of voices, allusions, and literary references, the poem evokes the chaos of an era marked by moral disarray. This intricate tapestry uses varied styles, from dramatic monologue to stream-of-consciousness, reflecting the deep psychological and existential crises experienced by individuals grappling with a disintegrating world. Key thematic elements include despair, renewal, and the search for meaning amidst cultural desolation, which resonates powerfully with contemporary readers. Eliot, a key figure in modern literature, drew upon his extensive background in philosophy, theology, and literary traditions. His exposure to different cultures and languages, particularly during his time in Europe, influenced his explorations of identity and spirituality in "The Waste Land." The poem represents a culmination of his intellectual journey and showcases his mastery in weaving complex narratives that challenge traditional poetic forms. Readers seeking a profound exploration of human experience in the context of societal upheaval will find "The Waste Land" an essential read. Eliot's work invites introspection, beckoning us to confront the complexities of life in a fractured world, making it a timeless piece relevant to both historical and contemporary discourse.

In these peculiar times, we are thrust back into ourselves in a kind of suspension: one in which only private life exists yet threatens to become trivial through a sense of mutual, overarching dread.
Lent from award-winning writer Kate Cayley is built from this tension, exploring domestic and artistic life amidst the environmental crisis and the surprising ways that every philosophical quandary—large and small—converges in the home, in small objects, conversations, and moments. The grotesque and the tedious, the baroque and the banal, intertwine in the first three sections. Meticulous depictions of spectacle run into the repetition of daily domestic life: trying to explain time to children, day trips to the planetarium, and the warnings of strangers; these are interspersed with depictions such as Mary Shelley recalling the monster, the inner life of a seventeenth century portrait sitter, and Ted Hughes's second wife telling her story to the dead Sylvia Plath. The title section explores religious faith; how belief is itself a repetition, a slow accumulation over time, just like love or forgiveness.
Lent is an exquisite work of our era, asking us to contemplate what it means to live in a broken world—and why we still find it beautiful.

Knife Sharpener – Selected Poems is a posthumous commemoration and celebration of Sargon Boulus, in a collection of poems, written between 1991 and 2007 that he translated himself, together with an essay, "Poetry and Memory", written a few months before he died in October 2007.
With a Foreword by Adonis and an Introduction by Dublin poet and publisher Pat Boran, the volume includes nine pages of photographs and tributes from fellow poets and writers Saadi Youssef, Ounsi El-Hage, Amjad Nasser, Abbas Beydhoun, Abdo Wazen, Fadhil al-Azzawi, Kadhim Jihad Hassan, Khalid al-Maaly, and Elias Khoury, assembled and translated by fellow Iraqi poet Sinan Antoon, who described his death as leaving "a gaping wound in the heart of modern Arabic poetry".
"Sargon seemed to feel also the even greater, historical weight of conflicts, tensions, misunderstandings and oppressions of the spirit, as if his poems came through his own time and language but from somewhere else." – Pat Boran
Sargon Boulus was unusually influential among young Arab poets, who "found in him the father who refused to practise his patriarchy and a poet who always renewed himself in his rebellion against rhetoric . . ." Abdo Wazen
