A deep-dive investigation of education privatization that reveals voucher programs as the faulty products of decades of work by wealthy patrons and influential conservatives

This thought-provoking work traces the origins of voucher-based education reform to mid-twentieth-century fears over school desegregation. It shows how, in the intervening decades, a cabal of billionaire conservatives supporting a host of special political interests—including economic libertarianism, religious choice, and parental rights—have converged around the issue of education freedom in an ongoing culture war. Through deliberate policymaking, legislation, and litigation, Cowen reveals, an insular advocacy network has enacted a flawed system for education finance driven largely by dogma.

Far from realizing the purported goal of educational equity, privatization is failing students and exacerbating income inequality, Cowen finds. He cites multiple research studies that conclude that voucher programs return poorer academic outcomes, including lower test scores on state exams, especially among students who are at greater academic risk because of their race, their religion, their gender identity, or their family's income. Continued advancement of these policies, Cowen argues, is an assault on public education as a defining American institution.

Emily and I combined our powers and had an in-depth chat about Laurie Lawrence, his character arc and the lack of it in every-single-little-women adaptation. In the novel, Laurie starts out as a very idle and sometimes pretty misogynistic figure and it is thanks to Amy he becomes a better person, but these elements of him are not in the adaptations.
Friedrich Bhaer is based on philosopher Henry David Thoreau. Louisa was in love with him and he appears in literal disguise in all of her novels. He is also based on Alcott's favourite writer, the German poet Goethe. Unlike Greta Gerwig lies to millions of people, Jo and Friedrich never argue in the book, and Friedrich is the one who helps her to become a writer. Laurie is partially based on Alcott's ex, Laddie Wisniewski, and her friend Alf Whitman. She had a maternal relationship with both of these men who were younger than she. One of the goals of the Little Women podcast is to examine these relationships, and how Little Women adaptations ignore their significance. 150 year Laurie problem was the first episode of the Little Women podcast and it has become one of my most downloaded episodes. I am very humbled and happy about this. I do think it is imporant that film industry would pay more attention to his character. I hope you enjoy this chat between Emily and I.
Please notice that this is a short-form book, based on a podcast episode.
Little Women Podcast is an ongoing series of video essays, articles and podcast episodes that examines the intersections in Louisa May Alcott´s Little Women.
Hosted by Alcott essayist Niina Niskanen. Regular visits from literal scholars and Little Women fans.

This is a bundle of 3 titles, which cover the following topics:
Title 1: Learning to understand ourselves, the dark and the light, the kind and the cruel, that exists within each one of us, has been a driving factor in psychological studies.
Machiavellianism in psychology refers to a personality trait which sees a person so focused on their own interests they will manipulate, deceive, and exploit others to achieve their goals. This audiobook will dive deeper into this topic along with related factors, such as how they control and manipulate others and the consequences that come with it. This audiobook will shed some light on how to spot a manipulator and how to outwit one. Listen about various blackmail tactics and how to spot and avoid some of the most common scams on the internet.
Title 2: Since our various vehicles were created, from the train, to the car, to the plane, to the sub, to the rocket, our world has gotten so much smaller, now, space is the last great frontier. There is another unknown great frontier, one that we are only beginning to discover, the human mind, especially the subconscious. Our emotions, our thoughts, that gut instinct telling you something isn’t right. It’s all linked to the subconscious.
Our subconscious is a very powerful thing, and just like every other powerful thing in the world, it’s dangerous. In fact, our own subconscious is more dangerous to us than it is to others.
Title 3: Abuse. It’s wrong, it’s terrible no matter what form it takes. When most of you hear the word abuse you think of one of the physical kinds of abuse. For others, they think of a different kind of abuse, verbal, emotional, psychological, and mental; there are others, but this book focuses on verbal abuse.

    Racial Opportunity Cost - The...

Racial Opportunity Cost turns critical attention to the specific challenges faced by high-achieving students of color and gives educators a framework for recognizing and addressing these issues. Terah Venzant Chambers roots her discussion in the concept of racial opportunity cost, using a term borrowed from economics to refer to the obstacles faced and tradeoffs made by Black and Latinx students on the path to academic success.

Gathering firsthand accounts from students, practitioners, and researchers, Venzant Chambers underscores a set of experiences common to academically successful students from racially minoritized backgrounds, especially those who attend predominantly white schools. These personal accounts illustrate the many ways in which the negative effects of racial opportunity cost extend from K–12 education into postsecondary academics and beyond.

In this clarifying work, Venzant Chambers identifies the factors, such as school culture, intersectionality, and community acceptance that can increase or lessen racial opportunity cost across educational environments. Venzant Chambers's framework will help educators proactively cultivate change in their classrooms and schools so that they may lower racial opportunity cost and improve student experiences.
