  Much has been written about Western intervention during the breakup of Yugoslavia, and whether it made matters worse, prevented worse atrocities, or was simply ineffective. In early 1992, however, what was clear was that Europe was hopelessly divided over the best course of action to take towards Yugoslavia, and after several years of fighting, the Bosnian War was one of the most violent conflagrations in Europe since the end of World War II. 
  That war had been the byproduct of centuries of tensions in the Balkans, and an attempt in the wake of World War I to redraw the political boundaries of Europe and the Middle East. That included forming the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, initially known as the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, a particularly fragile enterprise, and there was almost constant tension between the majority Serbs and the other Yugoslav nationalities, especially the Croats. As a result, the Kingdom was a land of political assassinations, underground terrorist organizations, and ethnic animosities. In 1929, King Alexander I suspended democracy and ruled as a dictator until he himself was assassinated in 1934. 
  Depending on the source, many authors have focused on different catalysts for Yugoslavia’s demise, but Vesna Drapac may have succinctly summed the situation up when he wrote that by the end, the state “lacked a reason to exist.” There is certainly something in this sentiment, but the disintegration came at an enormous cost. 
  Given what happened in Yugoslavia, it should be little surprise the area that eventually became the modern nation of Montenegro has had a turbulent history for millennia, with shifting borders, different degrees of autonomy, and various conflicts occurring within it.

  The Olmec people are widely recognized as the first major civilization of Mexico and are thus generally regarded as the mother civilization of Mesoamerica, making them the people from which all subsequent Mesoamerican cultures derived. In fact, the term Olmec is thought to have originated with the Aztec people, as Olmec in their Nahuatl language means “the rubber people”, a reference to the inhabitants of the land from which they accessed rubber. By and large, the Olmec culture is perhaps best identifiable by their so-called colossal heads, mammoth basalt head-statues wearing helmet-like headdresses found throughout Olmec habitation sites. 
  	The Toltec are one of the most famous Mesoamerican groups in South America, but they are also the most controversial and mysterious. The Toltec have been identified as the group that established a strong state centered in Tula (in present-day Mexico), and the Aztec claimed the Toltec as their cultural predecessors, so much so that the word Toltec comes from the Aztec’s word Tōltēcatl, translated as artisan. The Aztec also kept track of the Toltec’s history, including keeping a list of important rulers and events, that suggest the peak of the Toltec occurred from about 900-1100 CE.  
  	In 2012 especially, there was a renewed focus on the Mayans, whose advanced calendar has led many to speculate the world will end on the same date the Mayan calendar ends. The focus on the “doomsday” scenario, however, has overshadowed the Mayans’ true contribution to astronomy, language, sports, and art.  
  	From the moment Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes first found and confronted them, the Aztecs have fascinated the world, and they continue to hold a unique place both culturally and in pop culture. Nearly 500 years after the Spanish conquered their mighty empire, the Aztecs are often remembered today for their major capital, Tenochtitlan, as well as their human sacrifice rituals.

  Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, better known as Emperor Claudius, ruled the Roman Empire from 41 to 54 AD. Born in Lugdunum (modern-day Lyon, France), in 10 BC, Claudius was the son of Drusus and Antonia Minor, both prominent figures in the Roman elite. His birthplace marked a significant departure from previous emperors, as he was the first Roman Emperor born outside Italy. Though Claudius’ family was rooted in the ancient Sabine people, his upbringing would not follow the traditional path of an elite Roman, largely due to his physical infirmities. He suffered from a limp and mild deafness, conditions that led his family to deem him unfit for public life and dismiss him from military and political endeavors. 
  Growing up in the shadows of more capable and ambitious relatives, Claudius was largely ignored by the Roman aristocracy. His health issues, though perhaps a result of childhood illness, kept him out of sight and out of mind during the brutal purges of Tiberius and Caligula. This absence from political life proved advantageous, as it spared him the many assassination attempts that claimed the lives of his more prominent family members. In a twist of fate, following the assassination of Caligula in 41 AD, the Praetorian Guard, upon finding him hiding in fear, declared Claudius the new emperor. As the only remaining adult male in his family, Claudius ascended to the throne, despite his perceived weakness. 
  Despite initial doubts about his ability to rule, Claudius quickly proved to be a capable and intelligent administrator. He worked tirelessly to stabilize the Roman Empire, which had suffered under the excesses of Caligula’s reign. One of his first actions was to restore the empire’s finances, expanding the imperial bureaucracy to include freedmen, and re-establishing order in the imperial administration.
