Summary

This illustrated, large-format book, Testimony: The Legacy of Schindler’s List and the USC Shoah Foundation—A 20th Anniversary Commemoration combines, for the first time, the behind-the-scenes story of the making of Schindler’s List with the history of the remarkable organization inspired by that landmark film. Steven Spielberg’s encounters with Holocaust survivors who visited the set and personally told him their stories set him on a quest to collect and preserve survivor testimony for generations to come. In 1994, he established the Shoah Foundation, and in the following four years nearly 52,000 eyewitness interviews were video recorded in 56 countries and 32 languages. This commemorative book relates how the foundation accomplished this feat through a worldwide network of dedicated people, pioneering interview methods, and state-of-the art technologies.A special 140-page section tells the riveting story of the film in photos, script excerpts, and the words of the cast and crew, including Liam Neeson, Ben Kingsley, and Spielberg. Drawing from the Universal Pictures archives and exclusive interviews, here are details on Spielberg’s struggle to bring Oskar Schindler’s story from novel to script to screen, the casting, cinematography, and especially what happened during the difficult shoot in Poland in 1993—on locations where actual events of the Holocaust occurred. Partnered with the University of Southern California since 2006, the USC Shoah Foundation has broadened its mission and now collects and preserves testimonies from other genocides, including those in Armenia, Cambodia, and Rwanda, while expanding its educational outreach, especially to young people. Its Visual History Archive—digitized, fully searchable, and hyperlinked to the minute—has become the largest digital collection of its kind in the world.  As Spielberg writes in his introduction, “I believe the work of the USC Shoah Foundation is the most important legacy of Schindler’s List.”

Marching across occupied France in 1944, American GI Leroy Stewart had neither death nor glory on his mind: he was worried about his underwear, which was engaged in a relentless crawl of its own. Similar complaints of physical discomfort pervade infantrymen's memories of the European theater, whether the soldiers were British, American, German, or French. Wet, freezing misery with no end in sight—this was life for millions of enlisted men during World War II.Sheer Misery trains a humane and unsparing eye on the corporeal experiences of the soldiers who fought in Belgium, France, and Italy during the last two years of the war. In the horrendously unhygienic and often lethal conditions of the front line, their bodies broke down, stubbornly declaring their needs for warmth, rest, and good nutrition. Feet became too swollen to march, fingers too frozen to pull triggers; stomachs cramped, and diarrhea stained underwear and pants. Turning away from the accounts of high-level military strategy that dominate many WWII chronicles, acclaimed historian Mary Louise Roberts instead relies on diaries and letters to bring to life visceral sense memories like the moans of the "screaming meemies," the acrid smell of cordite, and the shockingly mundane sight of rotting corpses. As Roberts writes, "For soldiers who fought, the war was above all about their bodies."

"Mastery" by George Leonard : Book SummaryABOUT THIS AUDIOBOOK SUMMARY:Mastery: The Keys to Success and Long-Term Fulfillmentby George LeonardLet’s begin at the beginning: what exactly is Mastery? Mastery is an individual’s intense dedication to their craft. Mastery doesn’t discriminate. Every industry has room for new masters—it doesn’t matter whether you want to become a master in the board room or on the football field. Mastery is not a matter of domain, it’s a matter of dedication.A true master is a person who has developed (and continues to develop) higher and higher levels of skill, prowess, dexterity, and deftness over their craft. A master is someone who has a deep and intuitive grasp of their work—someone who possesses a level of expertise worth marveling over—and yet still continues practicing the fundamentals of their craft. These are the qualities of a master. And if you want these qualities, you should know they aren’t easily acquired. They require us to approach our work with love and dedication—both in times of pleasure and in times of pain.Mastery is not a destination—it’s a lifelong practice. Although the day may come when you realize you have become a master of your craft, it isn’t an outcome you become overly focused on. It’s not an achievement—it’s a way of life. The Big Ideas we’ve gathered from this book—Mastery: The Keys to Success and Long-Term Fulfillment by George Leonard—will teach you some of the most important principles you’ll need in order to begin your very own path to mastery. The author of the book, George Leonard, discovered the power of mastery through martial arts (specifically, aikido). Leonard found that examining the teaching styles of great aikido masters, along with their students’ learning styles and progress was an excellent way to key-in on the aspects that advance and hinder long-term learning and performance. After learning what it takes to gain mastery within the field of aikido, Leonard cross-referenced his learnings across various other fields and domains, and he came to a surprisingly simple conclusion: The essential elements of any master’s journey—the core fundamentals to follow, what pitfalls to expect, and what tools you need to succeed—are all generally the same! Different people take different routes to mastery, but they’re all walking in the same direction… Wanna walk with them? Get ready to learn how.ORIGINAL BOOK DESCRIPTION: Drawing on Zen philosophy and his expertise in the martial art of aikido, best-selling author George Leonard shows how the process of mastery can help us attain a higher level of excellence and a deeper sense of satisfaction and fulfillment in our daily lives.Whether you're seeking to improve your career or your intimate relationships, increase self-esteem or create harmony within yourself, this inspiring prescriptive guide will help you master anything you choose and achieve success in all areas of your life.In this book summary of Mastery, you'll discover:- The five essential keys to mastery- Tools for mastery- How to master your athletic potential- The three personality types that are obstacles to mastery- How to avoid pitfalls along the path- And more

In Profit and Punishment, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist exposes the tragedy of modern-day debtors prisons, and how they destroy the lives of poor Americans swept up in a system designed to penalize the most impoverished.“Intimate, raw, and utterly scathing” — Heather Ann Thompson, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Blood in the Water“Crucial evidence that the justice system is broken and has to be fixed. Please read this book.” —James Patterson, #1 New York Times bestselling authorAs a columnist for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Tony Messenger has spent years in county and municipal courthouses documenting how poor Americans are convicted of minor crimes and then saddled with exorbitant fines and fees. If they are unable to pay, they are often sent to prison, where they are then charged a pay-to-stay bill, in a cycle that soon creates a mountain of debt that can take years to pay off. These insidious penalties are used to raise money for broken local and state budgets, often overseen by for-profit companies, and it is one of the central issues of the criminal justice reform movement. In the tradition of Evicted and The New Jim Crow, Messenger has written a call to arms, shining a light on a two-tiered system invisible to most Americans. He introduces readers to three single mothers caught up in this system: living in poverty in Missouri, Oklahoma, and South Carolina, whose lives are upended when minor offenses become monumental financial and personal catastrophes. As these women struggle to clear their debt and move on with their lives, readers meet the dogged civil rights advocates and lawmakers fighting by their side to create a more equitable and fair court of justice. In this remarkable feat of reporting, Tony Messenger exposes injustice that is agonizing and infuriating in its mundane cruelty, as he champions the rights and dignity of some of the most vulnerable Americans.
