In this new and updated edition of the acclaimed classic Interviewing Users, Steve Portigal quickly and effectively dispels the myth that interviewing is trivial. He shows how research studies and logistics can be used to determine concrete goals for a business and takes the reader on a detailed journey into the specifics of interviewing techniques, best practices, fieldwork, documentation, and how to make sense of uncovered data. Then Steve takes the process even further—showing the methods and details behind asking questions—from the words themselves to the interviewer's actions and how they influence an interview. There is even a chapter on making sure that information gleaned from the research study is used by the business in such a way to make it impactful and worthwhile. Oh, and for good measure he throws in information about Research Operations.

But, hey, that's just the nuts and bolts of the book. The truly fun part is Steve's voice and how he portrays this information through amusing anecdotes about his career, fascinating examples from other practitioners, and tips and tricks that only the most experienced UX researchers, like Steve, could come up with. As a nod to the pandemic, he offers ideas for the best way to interview someone remotely, and he also discusses personal bias—how to identify and deal with it so that it doesn't affect interviews.

Kurani unveils a life-changing design philosophy, Baaham (pronounced BAH-hum), a word from Urdu meaning “in tandem”—describing two interconnected things working in harmony. Baaham draws from psychology, sociology, anthropology, and evolutionary biology. Whether you’re designing for yourself or others, at any scale from a bedroom to a city block, Baaham is a roadmap for improving health, building deeper relationships, and finding greater fulfillment. It’s not just a philosophy—it’s a way of life.
Featuring seven core principles, Baaham helps everyone—from financially strapped college students to a manager looking to improve their team’s performance—create environments that are functional, beautiful, and life-changing. The Jurchens, the ancestors of the Manchu people, emerged as a formidable force in northeastern Asia long before they established the Jin Dynasty. Originating from the forests and plains of Manchuria, they were a collection of semi-nomadic and agricultural tribes with a distinct culture, language, and way of life. Their society was organized into clans led by chieftains, and they engaged in hunting, fishing, and farming while maintaining a warrior tradition that would later define their military prowess. Although they lived independently, they often found themselves under the influence of stronger neighboring powers, including the Korean kingdoms and the Khitan-led Liao Dynasty.
The Liao Dynasty, which dominated much of northern China and Manchuria, exerted control over the Jurchens for centuries. The Khitan rulers forced them into a tributary system, requiring them to provide labor, furs, and horses in exchange for nominal autonomy. While this arrangement allowed the Jurchens to retain aspects of their culture, it also placed them in a subordinate position. However, resentment grew among the Jurchen clans, who viewed the Khitan overlords as oppressive rulers. This growing dissatisfaction set the stage for their eventual rebellion.
Despite their subjugation, the Jurchens developed a strong warrior tradition and mastered cavalry warfare, which would later give them an advantage over their adversaries. They organized themselves into tribal confederations and honed their skills in archery and horseback combat, making them formidable in battle. Their ability to adapt to different terrains, combined with their knowledge of the harsh northern climate, allowed them to maintain resilience and independence, even under Liao control. Over time, they also adopted elements of Chinese and Khitan governance, learning valuable administrative techniques that would later aid them in state-building.
