This fascinating audiobook takes the reader on a journey through the ages, explaining how clowns such as the whiteface and auguste came to be. You'll hear about history's best-loved performers such as Joseph Grimaldi, the father of modern clowning, and learn about the origin of terms used today such as the ‘clown alley’. The following is the audio track for Don't Be a Sucker, a 1943 anti-fascism propaganda film financed and produced by the United States Army Signal Corps, and shot at the Warners studio. The film stars Paul Lukas, Felix Bressart, Bob Bailey, Kurt Kreuger, and narrated by Lloyd Nolan. It follows a young American Freemason taken in by the message of a soap-box orator who asserts that all good jobs in the country are being taken by minorities, domestic and foreign. He then falls into a conversation with a refugee professor who tells him of the pattern of events that brought Hitler to power in Germany and how Germany's anti-democratic groups split the country into helpless minorities, each hating the other. The professor concludes by pointing out that America is composed of many minorities, but all are united as Americans. The film was re-issued in 1946 following the end of World War II.

Millions of baby boomers the world over grew up with the same electronic babysitter—the living room television. Stop any number of people on the street and ask them to do one of the following: recite the preamble to the Constitution, or sing the theme song to the Beverly Hillbillies. If history is any indication, the Hillbillies will emerge the conquering champions. Television was a special part of our childhood. It whisked us into worlds beyond our own. We were introduced to a flying nun, hillbillies who swam in a “cee-ment” pond, and a household of lovable green monsters who thought themselves the typical American family. We fell in love with these endearing characters and welcomed them into our living rooms with open arms, and to this day, their funny and familiar faces retain a special place in our memories and our hearts. As a classic television fan and historian, I wanted to delve deeper to find out more about these special friends, and go beyond what had previously been written in articles and books to find the answers to questions that casual, as well as die-hard fans have always wanted to ask. I wished to capture their first-hand accounts and preserve for posterity the historical significance of their time on some of the most beloved shows in television history. Through this book, I hope that TV fans of all ages will share in my enthusiasm at attempting to capture these golden moments, and savor the rich oral history of these small screen classics conveyed by those who were there--and that their memories and anecdotes will continue to enlighten, entertain, and endure for generations to come.

A nostalgic exploration of Britain's distinctive and architecturally significant seafront buildings from the 1920s to the new millennium.
British seaside resorts enjoyed phenomenal popularity for much of the twentieth century. Told chronologically, this book is the first look at how resort architecture around the UK coast kept pace with changing fashions and the increasing competition of foreign destinations.
Using vintage postcard images, Kathryn Ferry showcases the inherent playfulness of seaside architecture as it evolved from interwar classicism, through art deco and international modernism, to Festival of Britain-inspired mid-century style, then later to seafront tower blocks and the artificial beaches of 1970s leisure centres. Featuring a wide range of building types, Twentieth Century Seaside Architecture explores everything from beach huts and bandstands to lidos, piers, theatres, hotels and amusement arcades.
As climate change and the soaring cost of living provoke changing attitudes to travel, Britain's seaside has witnessed renewed popularity, making now the perfect time to champion our architectural legacy of domestic tourism. Offering a compelling reassessment, Twentieth Century Seaside Architecture will appeal to fans of architecture and design who love to be beside the sea.

It's one of modern history's most beloved sci-fi creations and while the Doctor is revered world-round, what about their companions, friends and acquaintances along the way? For all the time travel and extravagant alien worlds, Doctor Who is often at its best when it looks to you, the average viewer, and how the lives and values of us human beings are actually spectacular.
The cup of tea or coffee we make in the morning, the relationships we carry and lose in life, the routines we love and hate, the vinegar-soaked chippies we have at night – they might look mundane against the spectacle of the Doctor but what if it's us, the humans, who are the fantastical ones?
In We're Falling Through Space, J. David Reed investigates how Doctor Who uses its larger-than-life lens to consider how the mundane is a lot more special than we might realise. As one of the Doctors put it, 'Do you know, in nine hundred years of time and space, I've never met anyone who wasn't important before.'
