Sinopse

The moving story of the author’s adopted Rottweiler mix, Lou, a free-thinking heroic dog who changed his life forever.“Lou’s story is an emotional and deeply delt tribute to the powerful bond between dogs and humans. Last Dog on the Hill will make you long for that one special superdog that can truly change your life. We should all be so lucky to have a dog like Lou in our world.” —Garth Stein, author of The Art of Racing in the RainBorn of guard dogs on a secret marijuana farm in Mendicino County, California, Lou truly was one dog in a million. On the winter day that the ailing, tick-infested feral pup was rescued by Steve Duno, neither dog nor man had a clue as to what they were getting into . . .Last Dog on the Hill tells the story of an indigent young Rottweiler mix who went on to change the lives of hundreds of dogs and people, including the author's, whose career as a pet behaviorist was made possible through Lou's extraordinary intelligence and heart. Lou won the respect of gang members, foiled an armed robbery, caught a rapist, fought coyotes and kidnappers, comforted elderly war veterans and Alzheimer patients in their final days, taught ASL to kids, learned scores of unique behaviors and tricks, amassed a vocabulary of nearly 200 words, and helped rehabilitate hundreds of aggressive dogs, saving them from euthanasia. Lou was also a clown, a consummate performer, and Steve’s best friend for sixteen years. His inspiring story will resonate with anyone who has ever loved a dog.“Last Dog on the Hill is a wonderful mixture of humor, heartbreak, and high jinks. I couldn’t put it down. Lou will steal your heart.” —Janet Evanovich, New York Times–bestselling author of the Stephanie Plum series

THE UNTOLD, INSIDE STORY OF MY LIFE AT RANGERS FC AND IN BUSINESS

Sir David Murray’s life story is a truly remarkable tale of never-say-die triumph over unimaginable adversity.

For 50 years he has been a towering figure in Scottish business, sport and philanthropy. His family name is synonymous with steel but his rise to power owes as much to mettle as it does to metal.

At the age of 24 he was involved in a horrific car crash in which he lost both of his legs. As his life hung in the balance, his days in hospital, drifting in and out of consciousness, were nightmare moments but ones that would define him.

And in the aftermath, when he finally pulled through, he had stark choices to make. ‘I could fight or I could give up,’ he said. ‘Turn left or turn right.’ David Murray almost always chose wisely and has never once shied away from big decisions. This is a man who thrived on the big stage, as the owner of Rangers Football Club during an unprecedented era of success. He won nine league titles in a row, oversaw some memorable European campaigns, all while rubbing shoulders with the likes of Paul Gascoigne, Graeme Souness and Sir Sean Connery.

He led the talks on the Old Firm clubs joining the English football pyramid, while his sale of the club to Craig Whyte set off a chain of events that eventually saw the club liquidated.

Now, for the first time, and in his own words, he is offering a deeply personal insight into his extraordinary life and how he courageously recovered from his accident and then went on to become such a successful entrepreneur.

He also gives us his thoughts on the Old Firm rivalry, explains why Celtic Park wasn’t the most hostile ground in Scotland for Rangers to visit... and describes how he beat world champion Stephen Hendry at snooker!

When Pauline Chen began medical school, she dreamed of saving lives. What she didn't count on was how much death would be a part of her work. Final Exam follows Chen over the course of her training, as she struggles to reconcile a shared humanity with her patients and to separate ideals about healing from a fierce desire to cure. Chen's transfixing and beautiful rumination on how doctors negotiate the ineluctable fact of death becomes, in the end, a brilliant questioning of how we should live. Moving and provocative, informed equally by clinical expertise and extraordinary personal grace, this is a piercing and compassionate journey into the heart of a world that is hidden and yet touches all of our lives.

Around the World in 80 Days  is an adventure novel by the French writer Jules Verne, first published in French in 1872.
A classic adventure story about the incredible journey of the gentleman Phileas Fogg and his servant-companion Passepartout. Phileas Fogg, who was a member of a respectable London club, had a bet with one of its members. The essence of the bet was to cross the globe in 80 days, that is, to start and end the journey in London at a certain time. Phileas Fogg made accurate calculations and was sure that traveling around the world in 80 days is a reality. However, fate intervened in his travels - Phileas Fogg is followed by Fix, who is mistakenly convinced that the crime that was committed in London on the eve of the departure of Mr. Fogg and Passepartout was the work of Phileas Fogg. But nothing will stop travelers if they are driven by honesty and sincere feelings. Thanks to this novel, you can not only witness an exciting journey, but also learn about the everyday life and specifics of people's lives at the end of the 19th century in different countries, as well as ways of moving people over long distances (some of them are no longer used by travelers).

In 1934, after five years travelling the world as a Merchant Seaman, my father, aged 21, enlisted in the British Royal Air Force to escape the Depression. Entering the Marine Branch, he swapped big ships for small fast boats - Seaplane Tenders, Armoured Target Boats and High Speed Launches.
In 1940, when the Air Sea Rescue service was formed, he joined the crew of High Speed Launch 102 (now fully restored and based at Portsmouth) as a Coxswain, stationed at Blyth. Three busy years on the "Spitfires of the Sea" followed, before his leg was "smashed" in heavy seas.
On recovery, he spent time in the Faroe Islands and in the English Channel, after "D-Day", and before being commissioned. The war's end found him in West Africa. After VJ Day he was demobbed, then recalled and posted to Egypt.
After a brief unhappy spell in "Civvy Street", he re-enlisted in the RAF as an acting corporal. First on the scene when HSL 2555 blew up, he was commended and subsequently carried the RAF ensign at the 1950 Battle of Britain celebrations in Paris, France. On return to the UK he was once again commissioned.
In Malta, during the Suez Crisis, he supervised a flying boat airlift of families and service personnel through Malta as the Canal Zone was evacuated. Later, serving in Cold War Germany, he skippered German boats with mixed German/British crews and was present when the Unit was handed back to the Germans.
In 1961, aged just 48, injuries forced his retirement from the RAF.
Now, fittingly narrated by my actor daughter, this book reveals a great deal of the little known story of the RAF Marine Branch, its boats and the life of a British serviceman's family in war and peace.
