Sinopse

A one-of-a-kind collection including some never-before-seen photographs of the wild and unforgettable WHA from legendary sports photographer Steve Babineau

On October 12, 1972, legendary Boston sports photographer, Steve Babineau, was in attendance for the debut of the New England Whalers. They were taking on the Philadelphia Blazers at the old Boston Garden — and Babs was shooting the action. Fifty years later, he’s still photographing big-league sports events — but this lovingly curated collection documents both his earliest published (and unseen) works and the wild emergence of the colorful, revolutionary, wild, and unforgettable WHA.

In an era when rolls of film still had to be changed by hand and cameras were focused manually, when arena lighting was questionable and images had to be captured through the haze produced by smoking fans, Babineau captured it all: the timeless legends who were finally getting paid, the journeymen who finally got a shot at the pros, the 17-year-old who would go on to rewrite record books, the brawls and goals, the glorious ’staches and flows, the highs and the lows …

Behind the Lens: The World Hockey Association 50 Years Later has the Golden Jet and the Howes, the teams that seemed to change names and cities as often as some players changed wooden sticks, and even the true origin story of that Wayne Gretzky photo that’s become the million-dollar holy grail for sports card collectors.

Basketball is a fast-paced, dynamic game that combines athleticism, skill, and strategy. Understanding the fundamentals is key to becoming proficient on the court, whether you are a beginner or an experienced player. This chapter will introduce the basic concepts of the game, from the layout of the court to the different player positions and essential rules.
The first step in mastering basketball is understanding the court layout. The basketball court is a rectangular surface, typically 94 feet long and 50 feet wide, with a hoop at each end. The court is divided into two main sections: the frontcourt, where the offensive team plays, and the backcourt, where the defensive team operates. Key markings on the court include the three-point arc, free-throw line, and the key area, also known as the paint, which is crucial for both offense and defense.
Next, it’s important to know the different player positions. There are five main positions on the basketball court: point guard, shooting guard, small forward, power forward, and center. Each position plays a unique role depending on their strengths and the team’s strategy. The point guard is typically the team’s primary ball handler, responsible for directing the offense and distributing the ball. The shooting guard focuses on scoring, especially through perimeter shots. The small forward is versatile, able to score, defend, and contribute in various aspects of the game. The power forward is often a physical presence in the paint, both offensively and defensively, while the center usually plays near the basket, focusing on rebounding and shot-blocking.

From the Duck Dynasty star and #1 New York Times bestselling author comes a rollicking popular history of fishing in America.
American Fisherman traces the impact fishing has had in shaping America’s history, and reveals the influential role it has played in defining our lives. Willie Robertson persuasively argues that America became what it is today in no small part because of the anglers that call it home. From harvesting New England cod to fly fishing for Yellowstone trout to raising Pacific Northwest salmon, the fishing industry has long played an essential role in the establishment of many of the nation’s earliest ports, most notably along the East Coast. Robertson explores how fishing has informed our culture, in literature, movies, and television, from classics like The Old Man and the Sea, A River Runs Through It, and Moby-Dick to The Perfect Storm, In the Heart of the Sea, and The Deadliest Catch, to popular local television fishing programs from coast to coast.
Robertson also analyzes the economics of this $50 billion annual business which supports a host of industries, including tourism and manufacturing, as well as conservationism. Told in Robertson’s charming down-home voice, American Fisherman is a spirited and unique look at America and its people.

“Takes an inside look into the wave of player departures that has rocked the game both in Cuba and the U.S., while providing historical perspective.” —USA Today   The stellar play and fascinating backstories of exiled Cuban sluggers and hurlers has become part of Major League Baseball history. On-field exploits by colorful Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig, AL rookie-of-the-year José Abreu, home run derby champion Yoenis Céspedes, radar-gun busting Cincinnati fast-baller Aroldis Chapman, and a handful of others have been further enhanced by feel-good tales of desperate Cuban superstars risking their lives to escape Fidel Castro’s communist realm and chase an American Dream of financial and athletic success. But a truly ugly underbelly to this story has also slowly emerged—one that involves human smuggling operations financed by Miami crime syndicates, operated by Mexican drug cartels, and conveniently ignored by ball clubs endlessly searching for fresh waves of international talent.   Given rare access to Cuba and its ballplayers, Peter C. Bjarkman has spent over twenty years traveling to all corners of the island getting to know the top Cuban stars and witnessing their struggles and triumphs. In this book, Bjarkman places events in the context of Cuban baseball history and tradition before delving into the stories of the major Cuban stars who have left the island. He reveals their personal histories, explains the events that led them to defect from their homeland, and details their harrowing journeys to US shores. Players whose big-league dreams failed are also discussed, as are Cuba’s efforts to stem the defection tide through working agreements with the Japanese and Mexican leagues. Cuba’s Baseball Defectors will fascinate baseball fans, those interested in the history of US-Cuba relations, and those wanting to learn more about the unsavory story of human trafficking in the name of baseball glory.   “A revelation . . . an original social history for sports enthusiasts and readers interested in past and future Cuba–U.S. ties.” —Library Journal Includes photos
