Beschreibung

Mac vs PC explores the epic battle between Apple's Macintosh and the IBM PC, a contest that fundamentally shaped the personal computer revolution. This book dives into not only the technical aspects of operating systems and hardware architecture but also the strategic business decisions that fueled this technology rivalry.

The book reveals how the PC's open architecture and the "Wintel" alliance allowed it to dominate, while the Macintosh emphasized a closed, vertically integrated system. The book details how the PC's licensing model fostered a thriving ecosystem, contrasting Apple's more controlled approach. It also highlights how both platforms shaped technological innovation, influencing productivity and communication.

The narrative progresses chronologically, first laying the groundwork with introductions of key players and their visions, then examining the hardware architectures of the Macintosh and the PC. Finally, the book analyzes market positioning strategies employed by Apple and IBM, examining their advertising campaigns and pricing models.

By exploring the interdisciplinary connections among computer science, business strategy, and design, Mac vs PC provides a nuanced perspective on why the PC triumphed, a victory not solely attributed to superior technology. This book is valuable for anyone seeking insights into personal computer history, technology rivalry, and the dynamics of open versus closed ecosystems.

Dalai Lama (2000) believes that seeking happiness "lies in our nature": The desire or need to be happy knows no bounds. It is something that lies in our nature. As such, it needs no grounds and it is justified by the simple fact that it is something we rightly want out of our nature. One has also asked if happiness is as important in all cultures. The answer is that happiness is at the top of the wish-list in every country; It is more important than wealth and to come to heaven, and as important as love (Diener and Biswas-Diener, 2008)...what makes us richer has been costly. The wealth, or what has been the prerequisite for wealth, has reduced a quieter life, close and stable relationships, we are moving apart. A materialistic lifestyle has a negative connection with happiness (Hellevik, 2003). NEF (2016) has calculated values on Happy Planet Index for 140 countries. Highest ranks Costa Rica and a number of other countries in Latin America. The population of Costa Rica has high values for happiness and longevity, and they have low values of ecological footprints. Norway has very high values of happiness and longevity, but also of footprints. In total, Norway is ranked twelfth and therefore highest among European countries, but closely followed by Albania. The United Kingdom is at thirty-fourth place, Canada number eighty-five and the United States number 108.

This book explores whether the Metaverse—understood here as a persistent, immersive, and widely utilized, virtual world—will be the next chapter in the evolution of cyberspace, and what that means for people, business, and society.
The Metaverse. Depending on your perspective, it's the future of the Internet, the next generation of video games, or "a deeply uncomfortable, worse version of Zoom." In many ways, the confusion, overpromising, and hype are reminiscent of how the Internet itself was envisioned in earlier epochs.A diverse range of firms are investing in Metaverse tech, causing a digital gold rush. There is plausibly a substantial first-mover advantage to be won, which Forbes has estimated to be north of a $1 trillion revenue opportunity. But there have also been questions raised about the utility of the Metaverse, with many firms, including Disney and Meta itself, pivoting to AI even as others like Apple release new products doubling down on spatial computing. In the trademark style of the What Everyone Needs to Know® series, this book provides an understanding of what the Metaverse is, how it is different from virtual and augmented reality, and the emerging Metaverse economy. It looks at media, politics, speech, crime and security, and identity and privacy in the Metaverse. It explores how governance and law operate—or may operate—in the Metaverse, the rights of bots, and our Meta future. The stakes are high, and confusion abounds, particularly in the public, making The Metaverse a perfect addition to the What Everyone Needs to Know® series.
