Sinopse

Drum confronts a senator to save the life of a drunken old friendWhen Chester Drum knew him, Jack Morley was a Washington player, just a few promotions away from becoming Secretary of State. A bad divorce and a nervous breakdown later, Morley has hit rock bottom, and works in Paris for the Army ghoul squad, confirming the deaths of World War II soldiers long ago reported missing in action. Morley is content to spend the rest of his life wallowing in the bottom of a Pernod bottle, until word gets out that he is blackmailing a US senator—an accusation that could cost him his life. Though disgusted by his old friend’s drunkenness, Drum agrees to make Morley’s case to the senator. Blackmailer or no, Morley has stumbled onto a conspiracy that dates back to the end of the war. If Drum can’t get to the bottom of it, Morley won’t be the only one to die.

When the cast of the old Hearth and Home TV show gather for a twenty-fifth reunion at a local bed-and-breakfast where the show was filmed, the townsfolk are thrilled to meet the actors and relive their memories of a simpler time. Their nostalgic mood is broken, though, by an ambitious real estate developer who has also come to Quincy's Gap with an eye toward turning the quiet town into the South's hottest new tourist destination. Tensions are boiling over, and when the developer gets a little too sauced one night at the B&B and turns up dead the next morning, James and the supper club will have to put aside their distaste for the victim to help nab the culprit.
It looks like an open-and-shut case, but James and his friends are convinced the main suspect is innocent and promise to help get her out of hot water. Dividing their time between the investigation and the reunion festivities, they're shocked to discover that members of the cast are guarding some very unsavory secrets. With time running out before the actors leave town and the trail of clues goes stale, the supper club will have to turn up the heat on a suspicious character before the killer serves up another murder.

A young man is killed in Miami's Bicentennial Park. Two shots -- one a through-and-through -- and on his body a quantity of coke is found. It would be easy to mark down his killing as gang related or a drug deal gone bad. While the simplest explanation may be the best, it does not follow that it is always true. There is something about the angles of the bullets that killed him that are off...and why take his gun and money, and leave the drugs? And who would have the skill to carry all of this out without leaving a path in the grass? A serial bomber has been spreading terror across the western states. The FBI has been on his trail for years, but always one day too late, leaving frustrated agents to sweep through bombed sites, looking for leads. A search of an Albuquerque motel and its Dumpsters has led the agent-in-charge to Miami, hoping this time he will not need the services of the Miami-Dade Crime Lab. A bomb set in a house kills a doctor and all of his family. If this is the same bomber, he has changed his pattern. Why? Does he feel more comfortable here in Miami? Lieutenant Horatio Caine is going to find him, and make sure the only comfort the bomber finds is offered by the state -- in jail.

I'll admit this book sat on my shelf for a few months before I finally started reading it. I thought it was going to be a somewhat dry account of the opioid epidemic. Two chapters in I realized how very mistaken I was. The story is fast-paced and very hard to put down. I finished all 300 pages in a week. I won't include any more details to avoid spoilers, but it is fascinating to see the relationship between Dr. Bolden and the president of the pharmaceutical company develop. The peripheral characters are all interesting and multi-dimensional as well. Considering what is going on in national politics and given the current opioid crisis, this book is extremely relevant, and is a must-read. The author clearly has a vivid imagination and a natural knack for good storytelling.

From the Pulitzer Prize–winning, #1 New York Times–bestselling author, “an unsparing and sympathetic portrait of a newspaperwoman” set in the 1940s–1970s(The Wall Street Journal).   The riveting tale of one woman’s journey and her rise to power. Anna Hastings, the story of a female journalist whose career begins just as the United States is getting into World War II, gives readers an inside glimpse into the workings of journalism in Washington. Pulitzer Prize–winning author Allen Drury takes his own experience in the field to reflect on the state of journalism in the capitol. In contrast to his other books, notably Advise and Consent, he humanizes the very field he often calls into question. Anna Hastings is a magnificent novel, shown through the eyes of vivid, fascinating, and humanly likable characters, from a master of spellbinding political fiction.
