The shift allowed them to have more creative control over the town, like placing it under quarantine, which wouldn't be possible with a real location.
The Duffer Brothers drew inspiration from 1980s pop culture, including films by Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter, and Stephen King, as well as video games like Silent Hill and Dark Souls. They also took inspiration from the Cold War era and government conspiracy theories, such as Project MKUltra.
The series' title font and appearance were inspired by Stephen King's novel Firestarter, after Netflix requested the showrunners come up with a new title for the show. The title Stranger Things was chosen because it sounded similar to King's Needful Things.
