Sinopsis

In "The Black Riders, and Other Lines," Stephen Crane delves into the complexities of human experience through evocative imagery and poignant verse. This collection, published in 1895, is notable for its modernist style, characterized by sparse language and startling metaphors that challenge conventional poetic forms. Crane often intertwines themes of existential despair, nature's indifference, and the fragility of life, all while pushing the boundaries of Victorian poetic lyricism. His work captures the harsh realities of the human condition, making it a precursor to the modernist movement that would flourish in the 20th century. Stephen Crane, an American author known for his novels and short stories, gained prominence with the publication of "The Red Badge of Courage." His experiences as a war correspondent and his exposure to the gritty realities of life across America profoundly influenced his literary voice. "The Black Riders" reflects Crane's personal struggles with morality, war, and identity, echoing the tumultuous social landscape of the post-Civil War United States, as well as his fascination with the dualities of existence. This collection is highly recommended for readers seeking a raw and haunting exploration of the human spirit. Crane's ability to convey deep emotion through minimalistic language invites readers to reflect on their own experiences of suffering and resilience. A must-read for admirers of modern poetry and those interested in the evolving landscape of American literature.

'Our duty is plain. To bring an end to peace.'
An empire gone wrong; an empire completely gone, in fact. A nation with delusional ideas of its place in the world, making poor choices, involved in clumsy foreign adventures, constantly on the edge of war.
At home, class divides are stark yet all attention is on a Duke's ceremonial marriage. And surging through the chaos, the absurdities of masculinity threaten to destroy everything.
An epic fable set in the faraway Spanish Golden Age, Jo Clifford's play Losing Venice is a joyously original, witty take-down of dangerously daft machismo and the deranged behaviour of countries that have lost an empire and still not yet found a role…
First seen at the 1985 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Losing Venice was revived at the Orange Tree, Richmond, in 2018.

Vincent's first vivid childhood memories had flown with the wings of the wind, and they began to speak to him in a loud voice. He began to sink into them like quicksand. The glass of brandy slipped out of his hands, just as he had decided to pour himself a bit more of the alcohol, and shattered into many tiny shards with a loud bang. - Maybe it's a warning that I must change my life? - He saw nothing but a prism with white light. He was flying towards the light beam at a very high speed, just like the most powerful space rocket. The bright rays of light, like a white inclusive tunnel, began to narrow, and a mountain in the color of halva appeared in from of his eyes. He was flying directly towards it, just like the fastest eagle, and it seemed like he was about to crash into it. He felt scared of the unknown and that his body was moving by itself and that he couldn't control it anymore but, at the same time, he felt free because he could fly at such a tremendous speed, realizing that one part of his life was over. He was still alive but, only in a different form. Vincent was no longer Vincent because he no longer had his old name, and he didn't have his ancient past. Instead, he was greeted by a whole new life. His little heart was beating, and when he took a deep breath, he felt that he was alive again and felt his mother's warmth. The baby opened his little mouth and smiled. It was very dark but comfortable enough to turn slightly from side to side.

pppeeeaaaccceee, is a vast, imaginative and mesmerizing glide through Life and Power. The play is set in Ephemeral; three people firmly floating chat – in O'Donnell's inimitable rapid-fire style - about the revolution. Which revolution? Good question. A gently aggressive meditation, pppeeeaaaccceee examines our being, asks us what we're doing and reminds us that there are monsters in here.

With numerous photos and with contributions by the actors, technical staff and producer, pppeeeaaaccceee is more than just a play script – it is a document of the process of creating such a remarkable piece of alternative drama. This edition also includes O'Donnell's manifesto on theatre, 'Even a Broken Clock Occasionally Tells the Correct Time.'

Chicagoland hot-dog stands are open late. What the fuck you want?' one cashier asks me. What the fuck did I want? Hope? A car? To write? Jesus, I knew – just give me a Pepsi.

David McGimpsey's ?fth collection of poems takes to new levels the melding of the deeply personal and the culturally popular that drove his acclaimed book Sitcom (nominated for the A. M. Klein Prize for Poetry). This is confessional poetry as written by a chronic trickster and a committed liar.

Written in part as an homage to the poetic idols of McGimpsey's youth, John Berryman and Robert Lowell, Li'l Bastard is a collection of 'chubby sonnets' – sixteen-line poems organized into eight longer sequences – that explore the poet's obsessions and engagements with America and Canada, popular culture, love and death, aging, baseball and beer and Barnaby Jones. Adopting a wild array of tones and artistic strategies, from picaresque to fantasy, to observational humour and the simple song lyric, these poems map the poet's midlife crisis on a wild ?ight that touches down in Montreal, Chicago, Nashville, Texas and L.A.

Poignant and often achingly funny, Li'l Bastard will no doubt cement McGimpsey's status as a beloved and ever-surprising original.

Clark Ashton Smith was a poet, sculptor, painter, and author of fantasy, horror, and science fiction short stories. It is for these stories and his literary friendship with H. P. Lovecraft, from 1922 until Lovecraft's death in 1937, that he is mainly remembered today. With Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard, also a friend and correspondent, Smith remains one of the most famous contributors to the pulp magazine Weird Tales. This early volume of Clark Ashton Smith's poetry was published when he was only 19-years-old.
