“As this fresh anthology proves, there’s a mix of writers and sensibilities that inhabit the literary Midwest as to make the term unpredictable.” —Stuart Dybek, MacArthur Fellow and author of The Coast of Chicago

New Stories from the Midwest presents a collection of stories that celebrate an American region too often ignored in discussions about distinctive regional literature. The editors solicited nominations from more than three hundred magazines, literary journals, and small presses and narrowed the selection to nineteen authors. The stories, written by Midwestern writers or focusing on the Midwest, demonstrate that the quality of fiction from and about the heart of the country rivals that of any other region. Guest editor John McNally introduces the anthology, which features short fiction by Charles Baxter, Dan Chaon, Christopher Mohar, Rebecca Makkai, Lee Martin, Anthony Doerr, Roxanne Gay and others.

Elizabeth Gaskell is equally well known as Mrs Gaskell. When her mother died, she was three months old and she was sent to live in Knutsford, Cheshire with her Aunt Hannah, this setting would become the basis for her novel Cranford. At 22 she married and settled in Manchester to raise her family. Friends with Charlotte Bronte she went on to write her biography and was also highly regarded by a certain Charles Dickens who published her ghost stories in his magazine. Much of her work views the emerging industrial society of Victorian England through her own moral and religious values and has an uncanny ability to look at and report on the many strata of society.

In his first new work of fiction since Field Notes (1994), Barry Lopez embraces fable, historical fiction, and contemporary social realism in these spellbinding stories, all informed by his deep spiritual connection to the natural world.Moving from fable and historical fiction to contemporary realism, this book of stories from Barry Lopez is erotic and wise, full of irresistible characters doing things they shouldn’t do for reasons that are mysterious and irreducible. These are the works of a master at the top of his form. As always, Lopez’s stories transcend his subjects, linking human culture and landscape, poetry and philosophy, emotion and the earth’s mysteries. Eight of the print edition’s thirteen stories are included here:Remembering OrchardsThe Letters of HeavenEmory Bear Hands’ BirdsMornings in QuarainLight Action in the CaribbeanThe Deaf GirlThe MappistStolen Horses
