Sinopse

Financial independence is a dream for many, and some people will do anything to achieve it.

Freedom 56 is a thriller inspired by the author’s entrepreneurial journey, which includes thirty years of experience in the business world.

“Surprising and unpredictable.”

“Sometimes humorous, sometimes sarcastic.”

“An excellent finish!”

Marc Paradis is the leading expert in corporate finance and M&A in Montreal. Despite this enviable reputation, the 55-year-old is disappointed. His personal financial situation and his love life are failures compared to his brother Christophe, a Don Juan who seems to succeed at everything.

A meeting between the two men and the speaker Kim Roy, the so-called ‘Queen of Financial Independence,’ will trigger a series of events with dramatic consequences.

Despite his impeccable ethics, Marc will find himself plunged into the heart of a scheme led by unscrupulous people willing to do anything to achieve their goals. The rather conservative businessman will need to take huge risks to protect the most precious person in the world, his daughter.

What if the path to financial freedom is paved with bad intentions?

“Without Decent Restraint” is a story about the duality of man, both the conflict between the mind and the body, and also how the desire to get what we want can put that very thing in danger. It examines whether or not the things we do, justified to ourselves as being done out of concern for others, can actually have a selfish motive. It explores the horrors that come to the surface when a man is confronted with an unthinking and dangerous version of himself, as well as other elements:
    • A world ruined by a zombie apocalypse with a mysterious cause
    • One man’s determined quest to seek out one thing in the midst of the chaos at any cost
    • The protagonist’s desperation growing when his situation drastically changes
    • His adaptation to his new situation, and learning the things he is still capable of doing
    • A taut climax where his love and his strength will be put to the test
The stakes in any story such as “Without Decent Restraint” are always high. However, the stakes for the protagonist in this story aren’t just high, they are deeply, painfully personal. He will soon learn that he may be risking it all in order to determine that his family is safe, and that being dead doesn’t stop him from being responsible for their protection when the moment counts.

Elizabeth Stevenson was born in Chelsea in London on 29th September 1810.
Both parents embedded their strong Unitarian beliefs into Elizabeth who rebelliously was often reluctant to display these religious convictions.
The early death of Elizabeth’s mother saw her sent away to be brought up by her maternal aunt in Knutsford, Cheshire.
Her father now remarried but Elizabeth spent most of her childhood in Cheshire away from her father and his new family but was supportive towards her half-siblings.
Elizabeth’s aunt encouraged her education and particularly to read and express herself through writing.
In 1828, her brother John, who worked in the merchant navy, disappeared on a journey to India. This disastrous loss depressed her father, and she went to his household to nurse him for the next year before he died.
In 1832, she fell in love with William Gaskell, a Unitarian minister like her father, and married him. They settled in Manchester. This booming industrial city had a great impact on Elizabeth who felt the need to speak up for poor workers and their exploitation by large industrial companies. A collection of poems and short stories, ‘Sketches among the Poor’ appeared in 1837, co-authored by her husband. Her first major work, under a pseudonym, was ‘Mary Barton: A Tale of Manchester Life’ published in 1848.
During her career she worked continually with Charles Dickens and published much in his various magazines. With him she published ‘Lizzie Leigh’ in 1850 which dealt with the taboo subject of prostitution. She was an excellent writer and impressed her many Victorian literary peers. Much of her writing reflects her work as a social critic highlighting the exploitation of the working class and the situation of women in society.
On 12th November 1865, Elizabeth Gaskell died in Holybourne, Hampshire, after suffering from a heart attack a month earlier.
