An “informative and enlightening” biography of a scientist who helped bring insulin to the world, and went on to become a prominent philanthropist (The Franklin Daily Journal).

George Henry Alexander Clowes was a pivotal figure in the development of the insulin program at the Eli Lilly Company. Through his leadership, scientists and clinicians at Lilly and the University of Toronto created a unique international team to develop and purify insulin and take the production of this life-saving agent to an industrial scale.

This biography, written by his grandson, presents his scientific achievements, and also takes note of his social and philanthropic contributions, which he shared with his wife, Edith. It tells the story of Clowes from his childhood in late Victorian England to his death at Woods Hole on Cape Cod in 1958. Educated in England and Germany, Clowes came to America to join a startup laboratory in Buffalo, where he conducted basic research on cancer and applied research on other disease-related problems. Assuming the position of head of research at Lilly, Clowes was at the center of one of the great discoveries that changed the course of medical history and offered new life to millions of individuals with diabetes and other metabolic disorders. Clowes was also instrumental in the development of other commercial pharmaceutical advances. Devoted to a number of philanthropic causes, Clowes and Edith contributed greatly to the cultural life of his adopted country, a contribution that continues to this day.

Crickets are truly magical creatures. Not only their iconic chirping is often a pleasant evening song during warm mellow summer nights in the country, in many cultures crickets are associated with good luck, hope and even wealth. Crickets are beloved in Japan, especially for their musical songs.
In Brazil, some species are considered to be signs of hope or incoming wealth. Charles Dickens wrote a tale called The Cricket on the Hearth that featured a cricket acting as a household's guardian angel. The internationally known author and speaker provides an insightful look into the fusion of ecological issues and global gender politics.

This book on the importance of trees grew out of Bolen’s experience mourning the loss of a Monterey pine that was cut down in her neighborhood. That, combined with her practice of walking among tall trees, led to her deep connection with trees and an understanding of their many complexities. She expertly explores the dynamics of ecological activism, spiritual activism, and sacred feminism. And, she invites us to join the movement to save trees.

While there is still much work to be done to address environmental problems, there are many stories of individuals and organizations rising up to make a change and help save our planet. The words and stories that Bolen weaves throughout this book are both inspirational and down-to-earth, calling us to realize what is happening to not only our trees, but our people.

In Like a Tree learn more about:

The dynamic nature of trees — from their anatomy to their role as an archetypal symbol

Pressing social issues such as deforestation, global warming, and overpopulation

What it means to be a “tree person”

“You will never again see [a tree] without knowing it has a novel inside, it’s supporting your life, and it’s more spiritual than any church, temple or mosque. Like a Tree is the rare book that not only informs, but offers a larger consciousness of life itself.” —Gloria Steinem

What if our teeth are a reflection of who we are? What if dental problems such as toothache, decay and malpositioning illustrate the deep functioning of our true self? What if, by harmonizing our mouths, we could allay many of our physical and mental ills?
After years of dental practice, Michel Montaud made a breakthrough that would change his life and work completely. Without being fully conscious of what he was doing, he engaged in a dental therapy which would prove to be remarkably effective, going beyond the simple framework of mouth and teeth to extend to the human being as a whole. This guided self-therapy, which he refers to as Dentosophy, is a true alternative to the drastic measures of extraction, surgery and orthodontics. From personal experience, the author states that this approach can even remedy ailments such as chronic rhinitis and otitis, eczema, allergies, asthma, back problems and sleep disorders.
Montaud describes his personal journey of discovery, initially to help his suffering son. Now, after decades of experience and numerous eloquent clinical results, he demonstrates that this human-based approach to our mouth and teeth can stimulate, at any age, the extraordinary healing potential of our bodies. With case studies and supporting photographic evidence, he shows that Dentosophy improves the general health of patients, both physical and mental. This illustrated and accessible book offers an exciting new perspective on our teeth and their innate wisdom.
