Sinopse

The one where mum and Elvis lived unhappily ever after in our little Stoke Newington Victorian townhouse.

In this honest and gripping memoir, actor Stanley J. Browne reflects on a childhood and adolescence torn apart by his mother's mental disorder.

Stanley J. Browne is an actor, and he has been an actor all his life. Born to a Jamaican mother in a London suburb, he began rehearsing for the role of survivor from an early age. From birth he knew nothing but a home filled with love and the vibrancy of a Caribbean culture, but this changes when his mother is diagnosed with schizophrenia.

Stanley adopts the mantle of 'man of the house' as he is forced to scavenge for food and miss school, with his two sisters, to care for his baby brother. His life is further fragmented as they yo-yo in and out of the care system and Stanley must face the reality of being separated from his siblings.

An intelligent and sensitive child, Stanley descends into a life of crime and drug abuse. During his time spent in various young offender's institutions and prisons he battles with addiction and slowly begins to turn his life around.

Set against a backdrop of 1970s poverty, racism and hardship, Little Big Man is a powerful story of generational trauma and one man's determination to heal the wounds of the past. Most of all, it is a book about the universal desire for love, belonging and the search to find an authentic voice through the redemptive power of creativity and recovery.

‘Hitchhike to Love’ is a highly engaging memoir that tells the true story of the complex and difficult life of the author Harry Higgs. This unsettling memoir describes how mental health ran among a close-knit Midlands family in England due to their overbearing and overprotective mother Doreen, who ruled the household in a strict manner which caused the brother and sister Wendy and Raymond to seek adventure in hitchhiking from the West Midlands in England to Glasgow in Scotland to meet their soccer hero, Ally McCoist. In the process, Wendy found the man of her dreams, lorry driver David, of which Doreen disapproved immensely.

    W. F. Deedes

History, both political and literary, was made when W. F. Deedes met Evelyn Waugh in 1935. Both were in Abyssinia to cover a war which many in England regarded with bewildered indifference but which profoundly influenced an impending global conflict. Whilst Deedes was principally concerned with filing copy to London, the author of Brideshead Revisited had another agenda and another novel in mind, Scoop. As Waugh drank, played poker and observed hacks in seedy hotel bars in Addis Ababa, he focussed on one young reporter. W. F. Deedes has always denied his association with Scoop's Boot, the innocent abroad and nature-notes writer who is accidentally dispatched to a war-zone. However, he acknowledges some similarities - particularly the tonnage of kit he shipped from London. Bill Deedes considers that 'little' war and its importance with the hindsight of a further sixty-odd years of impeccably thoughtful reporting from other battlefields, whilst offering unique memories of his difficult contemporary - arguably the finest English novelist of his time. Written with characteristic wit, insight and affection, At War With Waugh is a small classic. ‘A fascinating memoir. . . full of well-observed detail and wonderful throwaway asides’ Hugh Massingberd, Daily Telegraph
