Summary

Karl, a good looking Danish guy and Asha, an extraordinarily beautiful Asian woman both work in the UK headquarters of a European cell phone operator. He finds her attractive, intelligent and great company. Asha admits she likes Karl, but when he asks her out, she turns him down and he is puzzled. While attending a senior management meeting in Prague, Karl suggests that Asha be offered a sales position. She interviews, is offered the job and as a thank-you Asha goes on a date with Karl, during which he tells her he thinks she’s a goddess, and would like to worship her. When she presses him on what he means, he stammers and she suddenly turns cold and ends the date. Baffled, he consults his ex-wife, Freya, who suggests that Asha may have picked up on Karl’s use of the word “worship”, and may be interested in sub/Dom relationships. At Karl’s flat Asha confirms to him that she is indeed very turned on by the idea of dominating a man.

The novel describes the life of a young man living through the revolution of 1848 and the founding of the Second French Empire, and his love for an older woman. Flaubert based many of the protagonist's experiences including the romantic passion on his own life. 'I want to write the moral history of the men of my generation—or, more accurately, the history of their feelings. It's a book about love, about passion; but passion such as can exist nowadays—that is to say, inactive.'

The Return of the Native is one of Hardy's most popular novels pioneering such themes as sexual politics, thwarted desire, and the conflicting demands of nature and society, a truly a truly modern novel written ahead of its time. Underlying these modern themes, however, is a classical sense of tragedy: Hardy scrupulously observes the three unities of time, place, and action and suggests that the struggles of those trying to escape their destinies will only hasten their destruction.

    120 Days of Sodom

The 120 Days of Sodom is "the most impure tale that has ever been told since our world began". It was written by the Marquis de Sade, in the space of 37 days, while imprisoned in the Bastille. Fearing confiscation, he had to write it on a continuous roll of paper, made up of small pieces glued together, and to hide it inside a dildo. The original manuscript is now on display in Paris, and is the third most expensive kept in France, insured for 12 million euros. Four unbelievably wealthy aristocrats lock themselves in a remote medieval castle, along with forty-two victims and accomplices. Ensues the often unbearable description of six hundred perversions, often applied to a victim while the narrator speaks; tales of torture, anal rape, coprophilia, paedophilia, in an obscene gradation that culminates in slaughter. This unfinished novel is a testimony to how dark the human soul can become when pushed to its limits; it transcends pornography, and no reader can emerge from it unscathed.
