Sinopse

Gracie Allen in this case is not a famous artist, but a worker in a perfume factory. She involuntarily gives the enchanted Philo Vance all the important clues in this murder of a gangster, in those days when Riverdale in the Bronx was a rural paradise. Vance meets her when she interacts with nature, and then again in a trendy restaurant where her brother plays an important role. For a moment, her mother appears, a gentle, faded lady who turns out to be as sharp as Gracie.

But his father's impatience for a male grandchild to carry on the family title spirals into a demand that Grant either remarry and aid in the effort—or be cut off. When Grant discovers Cassie operating the much-whispered-about Hope House in the poverty-stricken stews of Whitechapel, he's as impressed at her daring as he is furious. He also sees a wicked opportunity . . .Cassie is appalled when Grant threatens to expose her secret unless she agrees to a staged courtship. With any hope, the child his brother is expecting will be a boy, and Grant will be off the hook. But until then, Cassie intends to make him regret his scheming. The guide she’s replacing was just one of many. As Sloane settles into her new home—a one-room apartment she’ll be sharing with the five other guides—she can’t help asking questions and digging into the disappearances she’s heard about. Her new roommates tell her stories of dark legends and dangerous folklore surrounding the secluded camp but assure her there’s nothing to worry about. It’s all just superstition. When Sloane stumbles upon a clue and a secret message hidden beneath the floorboards of their loft, she begins to realize there may be more to the myths than she’s been told. The message gets her attention: Don’t trust anyone at Widow Falls. As she follows clues to better understand the missing guide she replaced, Sloane can’t help noticing the similarities between the two of them. Whatever’s happening at Widow Falls, it’s clear someone doesn’t want her digging into it. As the seams of her reality are torn apart, making her question everything, Sloane has to uncover the truth about the camp—and its occupants—before someone else goes missing.
