Sinopsis

Environmental Justice Gains delves into the critical issue of unequal environmental protection, specifically how marginalized communities disproportionately face environmental hazards while exploring the effectiveness of current regulatory actions. It highlights how environmental justice encompasses public health, economic opportunity, and social equity, demonstrating that clean air and safe water are not universally accessible.

Readers gain insights into how discriminatory zoning practices and industrial siting decisions have historically exacerbated these inequalities, creating legacies of environmental racism. The book examines environmental policy and law, particularly the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act, while assessing the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) role in enforcement. It emphasizes the necessity of community engagement and data-driven decision-making to address persistent disparities, advocating for a comprehensive and integrated approach.

Case studies of successful environmental justice initiatives and analyses of ongoing challenges are used to illustrate the practical applications of its findings. Beginning with an overview of environmental justice principles, the book progresses to examine environmental injustice cases across the United States, analyzing the regulatory frameworks applied and outcomes achieved.

It concludes with recommendations for improving environmental justice outcomes through policy reform, community empowerment, and innovative technological solutions, making it valuable for policymakers, advocates, and community members alike.

In this lively and entertaining work, Witold Rybczynski—hailed as "one of the best writers on design working today" by Publishers Weekly—tells the story of the most distinctive cars in history and the artists, engineers, dreamers, and gearheads who created them. Delving into more than 170 years of ingenuity in design, technology, and engineering, he takes us from Carl Benz's three-wheel motorcar in 1855 to the present-day shift to electric cars. Along the way, he looks at the emergence of mass production with Henry Ford's Model T; the Golden Age of American car design and the rise of car culture; postwar European subcompacts typified by the Mini Cooper; and the long tradition of the streamlined and elegant sports car.

Rybczynski explores how cars have been reflections of national character (the charming Italian Fiat Cinquecento), icons of a subculture (the VW bus for American hippies), and even emblems of an era (the practical Chrysler minivan). He explains key developments in automotive technology, including the electric starter, rack-and-pinion steering, and disc brakes, bringing to light how the modern automobile is the result of more than a century of trial and error. And he weaves in charming accounts of the many cars he's owned and driven, starting with his first—the iconic Volkswagen Beetle. The Driving Machine is a fascinating history of design.

Crystal structure and bonding are fundamental to understanding the physical properties of solid materials. A crystal is a solid material whose atoms, ions, or molecules are arranged in a highly ordered, repeating pattern extending in all three spatial dimensions. The smallest repeating unit of this structure is called the unit cell. The unit cell defines the crystal’s lattice parameters, including the edge lengths a,b,ca, b, c and the angles between them α,β,γ\alpha, \beta, \gamma. The crystal lattice is generated by translating the unit cell along its edges, forming the complete crystalline structure.
Crystals are classified according to their symmetry into seven crystal systems: cubic, tetragonal, orthorhombic, monoclinic, triclinic, hexagonal, and rhombohedral. Each system is characterized by specific symmetry elements such as mirror planes, rotation axes, and inversion centers. The Bravais lattices describe the 14 distinct lattice types that can fill three-dimensional space using translational symmetry. The atomic positions within a unit cell are described by fractional coordinates relative to the lattice vectors. In a face-centered cubic (FCC) lattice, atoms are located at the corners and the centers of the faces of the cube, while in a body-centered cubic (BCC) lattice, an additional atom is placed at the center of the cube.

Salmonella is a genus of bacteria that plays a major role in human and animal health, causing a wide range of infections with varying degrees of severity. It is responsible for one of the most common foodborne illnesses worldwide, with millions of people affected each year. While many may associate Salmonella solely with food poisoning, it is much more complex, comprising over 2,500 serotypes, each with its own specific characteristics and virulence factors.
The discovery of Salmonella dates back to the late 19th century, when Theobald Smith, working under the guidance of American bacteriologist Daniel Elmer Salmon, first identified the bacterium. Since then, much has been learned about its biology, transmission, and impact on public health. Originally, the genus was named after Salmon, though today it is classified under the family Enterobacteriaceae, sharing common traits with other enteric bacteria. Despite the significant advances in understanding Salmonella, new challenges continue to emerge, particularly in the form of antibiotic resistance and emerging serotypes with more aggressive characteristics.
Salmonella infections are typically categorized into two main types: gastrointestinal infections and systemic infections. The most common manifestation is gastroenteritis, which presents with symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, nausea, and abdominal cramps. These symptoms usually develop within 6 to 72 hours after exposure to the bacteria. Though often self-limiting, severe cases can lead to dehydration and, in rare instances, death. On the other hand, systemic infections like typhoid fever can cause more severe illness, potentially leading to complications such as intestinal perforation, septic shock, or organ failure. Typhoid fever remains a major health issue in many developing countries, while gastrointestinal Salmonella infections are more frequently encountered in industrialized nations.
