Sinopse

Aboriginal Land explores the long and complex struggle of Aboriginal Australians to regain their land rights, a battle deeply entwined with the nation's history and legal systems. It is a story of dispossession, resilience, and the enduring spiritual connection between Aboriginal people and their ancestral lands, examining how this connection influences identity, culture, and social structures.

The book highlights pivotal moments such as the Mabo decision, which overturned the concept of terra nullius, the idea that Australia was unoccupied before European settlement, and the subsequent Native Title Act.

The book journeys through the history of land dispossession, analyzing key legal cases and legislation and delving into the cultural significance of land from an Indigenous perspective. Understanding the Aboriginal perspective is crucial, as land is not merely property; it is a source of life, knowledge, and cultural continuity.

The book progresses by first examining the historical context, then scrutinizing legal frameworks, and finally exploring the cultural and spiritual significance of land, offering a balanced analysis of the Aboriginal land rights movement and its ongoing challenges.

A pivotal moment in American history, as told by our forefathers

On October 7, 1780, American Patriot and Loyalist soldiers battled each other at Kings Mountain, near the border of North and South Carolina. With over one hundred eyewitness accounts, this collection of participant statements from men of both sides includes letters and statements in their original form—the soldiers' own words—unedited and unabridged. Rife with previously unpublished details of this historic turning point in the American Revolution, described as the war's "largest all-American fight," these accounts expose the dramatic happenings of the battle, including new perspectives on the debate over Patriot Colonel William Campbell's bravery during the fight. Robert M. Dunkerley's work is an invaluable resource to historians studying the flow of combat, genealogists tracing their ancestors, and anyone interested in Kings Mountain and the Southern Campaign.

The love story of Zippa and Tony is nothing without the context of the Second World War.

The war introduced them - they met as blackout wardens in London. It gave them darkened streets to wander in, hand in hand, then, by sending Tony away to officer training camps, it sharpened their hunger for each other, casting a glow over his comings and goings. It turned them into schemers and wanglers against fate and army regulations. It pressed them into marriage, and when the war decided to deploy him to North Africa, it whispered the urgent question of a baby. To which Tony, thinking of the war, replied maybe not; and Zippa, thinking of the war, said yes.

In spite of themselves, the war experience was changing them both, and yet both were hanging on, looking back, suspended in memory and time, and living from letter to letter.

Decades later, their daughter Julie discovered their letters, and piecing them together began to create a portrait of her parents and their relationship that was completely unfamiliar to her. Vivid, honest and completely absorbing, Damn This War! is a true insight into a wartime love story.

When scholars study the history of the ancient Near East, several wars that had extremely brutal consequences (at least by modern standards) often stand out. Forced removal of entire populations, sieges that decimated entire cities, and wanton destruction of property were all tactics used by the various peoples of the ancient Near East against each other, but the Assyrians were the first people to make war a science. When the Neo-Assyrians are mentioned, images of war and brutality are among the first that come to mind, despite the fact that their culture prospered for nearly 2,000 years. Like a number of ancient individuals and empires in that region, the negative perception of ancient Assyrian culture was passed down through Biblical accounts, and regardless of the accuracy of the Bible’s depiction of certain events, the Neo-Assyrians clearly played the role of adversary for the Israelites.
Although the Biblical accounts of the Assyrians are among the most interesting and are often corroborated with other historical sources, the Neo-Assyrians were much more than just the enemies of the Israelites and brutal thugs. A historical survey of their culture reveals that although they were the supreme warriors of their time, they were also excellent merchants, diplomats, and highly literate people who recorded their history and religious rituals and ideology in great detail. Like their other neighbors in Mesopotamia, they were literate and developed their own dialect of the Akkadian language that they used to write tens of thousands of documents in the cuneiform script (Kuhrt 2010, 1:84). The Assyrians themselves viewed their history as a long succession of rulers from an archaic period until the collapse of the Neo-Assyrian Empire in the 7th century B.C., and the current divisions have been made by modern scholars based on linguistic changes, not on political dynasties (van de Mieroop 2007, 179).

We broke our new series on learning Italian down into different learning stages. Start with the "Lower Beginner" books followed by the "Beginner" and "Upper Beginner" books. Next, progress to the "Intermediate" series, then test and reinforce your knowledge with the "Conversations" series.
This audiobook is divided into units. While it provides different learning patterns and accommodates various needs, this audiobook focuses on helping you improve your ability to understand, speak, and memorise Italian.
In Unit 1 you will hear Italian decoded with each syllable spoken very slowly and clearly with repetition. Immediately before each sentence is spoken, you will hear the translation, so you will always understand what is being said.
Unit 2 focuses solely on increasing your listening ability, which will improve your abilities to engage in dialogue with a native Italian speaker. This chapter requires you to listen very carefully to nuances in the language.
By Unit 3 you will already notice progress in your abilities to speak and understand Italian. The spoken translation is followed by two repetitions in Italian at a completely natural speed. While you are learning to process naturally spoken Italian, Units 3 and 4 will help you memorise new vocabulary and full sentences.
In Unit 5 you can test yourself on how much you have learned. If you are having difficulties, we suggest you revisit the listening, speaking, or memorisation section of Units 1, 2 3 or 4, according to what you need more help with.
