Sinopse

This is a life-enhancing story of Anglesey-born Emma, Viscountess Bulkeley (1727-1770), daughter of Thomas Rowlands of Caerau, Anglesey, and her marriages to men from two leading Welsh families: James Bulkeley, 6th Viscount Bulkeley of Cashel (1716-1752), Member of Parliament for Beaumaris, Chamberlain of North Wales and Constable of Beaumaris, and after his death to Sir Hugh Williams (1719-1794).
Sophia Pari Jones takes us on a vivid journey of life at the time, with its intriguing backdrop of its people, its society and its politics. It depicts the cruel hardships of life, meted out particular to women, regardless of status, but shows the importance of a close-knit community and the support it gives to those within its embrace.
The second half of the story continues on a more personal and intimate note, with extracts from the letters written between Emma and her second husband, Sir Hugh Williams, who served in the Army, in Minorca, and then as Member of Parliament for Beaumaris, Constable of Beaumaris and also Mayor.
The story of Emma takes you on a simultaneously sensitive and enlightening journey through the people, places and events of the 18th century and the reigns of King George II and King George III, through the prism of a young woman from Wales.

Space may be the final frontier, but no frontier has ever captured the American imagination like the “Wild West”, which still evokes images of dusty cowboys, outlaws, gunfights, gamblers, and barroom brawls over 100 years after the West was settled. A constant fixture in American pop culture, the 19th century American West continues to be vividly and colorful portrayed not just as a place but as a state of mind.
Almost absent in the perceptions of modern America is the comprehension of African Americans participating so prolifically in the building of the nation. Print fiction idealizing the cowboy life to Eastern readers would not depict what had ignited the war for which so many had an utter revulsion. The black man of the post-war years did not inspire the white spirit so essential for reveling in the old system. The 20th century’s television and cinematic offerings operated on the same drive, and the existence of black cattle workers was all but blotted out. Indeed, many of the modern age are barely aware that an African-American ever “stepped foot on the West bank of the Mississippi River.” No one saw the black cowboy on screen or in print, the two information industries that shaped our perception of America’s westward expansion. Therefore, a collective assumption that they must never have existed at all was nationally internalized.
However, as UCLA professors Philip Durham and Everett L. Jones, authors of The Negro Cowboys, reminded readers, about 25% of cowboys working in the West were African-American. They further noted that former slaves emigrating from the South entered virtually every viable profession in the plains, mountain ranges, and on to the Pacific. Their contribution ranged from the military to mining, exploration, farming, and in the construction of the West’s first towns.

Bob Dylan is an iconic American artist, whose music and performances have long reflected different musical genres and time periods. His songs tell tales of the Civil War, harken back to 1930s labor struggles, and address racial violence at the height of the civil rights movement, helping listeners to think about history, and history making, in new ways. While Dylan was warned by his early mentor, Dave Van Ronk, that, "You’re just going to be a history book writer if you do those things. An anachronism," the musician has continued to traffic in history and engage with a range of source material—ancient and modern—over the course of his career.

In this beautifully crafted book, Freddy Cristóbal Domínguez makes a provocative case for Dylan as a historian, offering a deep consideration of the musician's historical influences and practices. Utilizing interviews, speeches, and the close analysis of lyrics and live performances, Bob Dylan in the Attic is the first book to consider Dylan's work from the point of view of historiography.

Have you ever been made to feel like the bad guy? Dr. bird has too. In this brief memoir, they reveal secrets about their life that they have kept hidden for over thirty years regarding compulsory heterosexuality, repressed/unexplored queernesses, and the late in life realization that -- turns out -- they're #actuallyautistic! Retold from their 33-year-old Dr. bird’s eye view, these extensively brave disclosures add one whole lifetime of flesh onto the U.S. body politic. This timely manuscript illuminates, historicizes, and contextualizes the f***ing fact that autism is not “just a trend” taking off just on TikTok recently, but that there are massive neuroqueer self-realizations happening worldwide in the algorithmic envirusment (environment + virus = envirusment). Dr. bird’s unmasked writing voice puts the “cut-the-shit” into “slice-of-life,” providing deep and raw disclosures of lifelong confusion, gaslighting, and struggles with family dysfunction, friendship loss, vulnerability, intimacy, sexual violence, and substance abuse. After extensive sharing, it’s time to grieve. They usher in a eulogy for their lifetimes that once were, by diagnosing how foundational U.S. ideas did and continue to dehumanize, sicken, disable, and deaden us. Then, they preach to the global choir about the single most connected time in history. Dr. bird has a lot more puns and trauma than answers, but in the end, recommends some liberatory antibodies for moving forward, far less miserably.
