Sinopse

"The Water Bear" delves into the extraordinary world of tardigrades, microscopic organisms that have become scientific superstars due to their unparalleled survival abilities. These eight-legged creatures, found everywhere from mountain peaks to ocean depths, demonstrate remarkable resilience through their ability to withstand extreme conditions that would destroy most other life forms.

The book meticulously explores their unique biological adaptations, focusing particularly on their ability to enter cryptobiosis—a state where they essentially pause all metabolic processes when faced with hostile environments. Through carefully structured chapters, the text progresses from examining tardigrades in their natural habitats to investigating their cellular structure and extraordinary survival mechanisms.

Readers discover how these tiny animals can survive temperatures near absolute zero, withstand pressures six times greater than the deepest ocean points, and endure radiation levels far beyond human tolerance. The book's approach combines rigorous scientific analysis with accessible explanations, making complex biological concepts understandable to readers with basic scientific literacy.

The narrative extends beyond mere biological curiosity, exploring practical applications of tardigrade research in biotechnology, space biology, and medicine. Drawing from extensive peer-reviewed research and international studies, including space exposure experiments, the book demonstrates how understanding these extremophiles could revolutionize various fields, from vaccine preservation to radiation protection.

This comprehensive examination of tardigrade biology offers valuable insights for students, scientists, and anyone fascinated by nature's remarkable adaptations, while maintaining a balanced perspective on both the potential and limitations of tardigrade-inspired innovations.

The first work of ‘living poetry’ in the world, by the author of the bestselling book Eunoia.
Christian Bök in Book 1 of The Xenotext outlined his plan to encode a poem into the genome of a deathless bacterium, thereby writing a text durable enough to outlive any apocalypse, surviving until the death of the Sun itself. After more than two decades of effort, Bök has, at last, succeeded at this incredible experiment, and Book 2 of The Xenotext situates his enterprise within the deep time of the cosmos.
Bök rehearses some of the techniques likely to be used in the future to preserve the cultural heritage of our civilization against a potential planetary disaster (be it thermonuclear warfare or astrophysical barrage); moreover, Bök speculates that, buried within the biochemistry of Life itself, there really does exist an innate beauty, if not a hidden poetry – a literal message that we might read, if we deign to seek it.

The Dark Energy Puzzle - Piecing...

In the late 1990s, astronomers made a discovery that completely changed our understanding of the universe. While studying distant supernovae to measure how fast the universe was expanding, researchers expected to see signs that the expansion was slowing down due to gravity. Instead, they found the opposite—the expansion was speeding up. This unexpected observation pointed to something completely unknown, an unseen force that counteracts gravity and drives galaxies apart at an accelerating rate. That force was given the name "dark energy."
The term "dark" doesn't mean this energy is black or shadowy, but rather that it's unknown and mysterious. Scientists still don’t know what it really is, only that it seems to make up around 68 percent of the total energy in the universe. That’s a huge amount, especially considering that everything we can see—stars, planets, gas, dust—makes up less than 5 percent. The rest is made of dark matter, another unknown component, but dark energy is even more puzzling. It doesn’t clump like matter does, and it seems to be spread evenly through space.
Astronomers began piecing this together by observing Type Ia supernovae, which are exploding stars that always reach roughly the same brightness. Because of that consistency, they can be used like cosmic measuring sticks. When scientists looked at supernovae that were billions of light-years away, they saw that those objects were dimmer than expected. That meant they were farther away than predicted, and the only explanation was that the universe had expanded more than anyone thought. It wasn’t just expanding—it was accelerating.

Now a sprawling video game franchise, Resident Evil has kept us on the edge of our seats for decades with its tried-and-true brand of jump scares, zombie action, and biological horror. But even decades after its release, we can't stop revisiting the original's thrills, chills, and sometimes unintentional spills.

Pop culture writer and horror cinephile Philip J Reed takes dead aim at 1996's Resident Evil, the game that named and defined the genre we now call "survival horror." While examining Resident Evil's influences from the worlds of film, literature, and video games alike, Reed's love letter to horror examines how the game's groundbreaking design and its atmospheric fixed-cam cinematography work to thrill and terrify players—and why that terror may even be good for you.

Featuring a foreword from Troma Entertainment legend Lloyd Kaufman and new interviews with the game's voice actors and its live-action cast, the book serves as the master of unlocking the behind-the-scenes secrets of Resident Evil, and shows how even a game filled with the most laughable dialogue can still scare the pants off of you.

A journey through the evolving cosmos, considering how human survival will depend on otherworldly perspectives.

In David Whitehouse's most ambitious book to date he explores how human evolution has been intertwined with the workings of the cosmos from the very beginning, and what the far-distant future may hold, both for the universe and for ourselves.

Given enough time, Whitehouse contends, we must communicate with intelligent aliens whose divergent perspective will transform our understanding of the universe. First contact may even come sooner than we think. We have already transmitted signals towards promising exoplanets. If, say, Gliese 581d harbours life, the return signal could reach us in 2051.

Drawing the thread of human consciousness from the cave to the cosmos, the acclaimed author of Apollo 11: The Inside Story charts our future journey to the end of space and time, and considers whether something of humanity could remain at the end of it all.
