Sinopsis

Joyful Habits offers a science-backed approach to cultivating happiness through intentional daily routines. This self-help psychology book emphasizes that happiness isn't just luck; it's a skill honed by consistently practicing specific habits. Drawing on research from psychology and sociology, it reveals how simple actions, like expressing gratitude or strengthening social connections, can significantly boost your well-being. For example, studies show that regularly practicing gratitude can rewire your brain to focus on the positive, leading to increased contentment.

The book uniquely bridges the gap between scientific research and practical application, providing actionable strategies that readers can easily integrate into their lives. It's structured to guide you through a comprehensive journey, starting with the core psychological principles of happiness, then diving into specific practices like mindfulness and relationship-building. Each chapter builds upon the last, culminating in a personalized framework for creating joyful habits tailored to individual needs.

Unlike quick-fix solutions, Joyful Habits advocates for a gradual, mindful approach, ensuring these changes become seamlessly integrated into your lifestyle. By focusing on positive emotions, fostering strong social connections, and establishing well-being routines, the book empowers you to take control of your emotional state and cultivate a more positive outlook.

As commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, George Washington developed the strategy that won the Revolutionary War, but while Washington directed some battles, his strategy for the most part was carried out by his subordinates. In the spirit of the best military history and biography, Washington's Lieutenants tells the story of the generals who served under Washington from 1775 to 1781.

Based on extensive research, the book finds the brigadier generals a laudable group of commanders. A quarter of all brigadiers died in the service of the new nation.

Only three served for the war's duration, including the great Nathanael Greene and Henry Knox. Ten resigned. Benedict Arnold turned coat. At least three were involved in the so-called Conway Cabal of 1777–78 to oust General Washington. The controversial Horatio Gates, self-proclaimed victor of Saratoga, was accused of cowardice at the Battle of Camden, South Carolina.

At once entertaining information about some of the Revolutionary War's most colorful military commanders and an insightful analysis of how the young nation fought for its independence, Washington's Lieutenants will be essential during the wars 250th anniversary and beyond.

Agincourt (1415) is an exceptionally famous battle, one that has generated a huge and enduring cultural legacy in the six hundred years since it was fought. Everybody thinks they know what the battle was about.

But why and how has Agincourt come to mean so much, to so many? Why do so many people claim their ancestors served at the battle? Is the Agincourt of popular image the real Agincourt, or is our idea of the battle simply taken from Shakespeare's famous depiction of it? Written by the world's leading expert on the battle, this book shows just why it has occupied such a key place in English identity and history in the six centuries since it was fought, exploring a cultural legacy that stretches from bowmen to Beatles, via Shakespeare, Dickens, and the First World War.

Anne Curry first sets the scene, illuminating how and why the battle was fought, as well as its significance in the wider history of the Hundred Years War. She then takes the Agincourt story through the centuries from 1415 to now, from the immediate, and sometimes surprising, responses to it on both sides of the Channel, through its reinvention by Shakespeare in King Henry V (1599), and the enduring influence of both the play and the film versions of it, especially the patriotic Laurence Olivier version of 1944, at the time of the D-Day landings in Normandy.

    The Northmen In Britain

Two great streams of Northern immigration met on the shores of Britain during the ninth, tenth, and eleventh centuries. The Norsemen from the deep fiords of Western Norway, fishing and raiding along the coasts, pushed out their adventurous boats into the Atlantic, and in the dawn of Northern history we find them already settled in the Orkney and Shetland Isles, whence they raided and settled southward to Caithness, Fife, and Northumbria on the east, and to the Hebrides, Galloway, and Man on the western coast. Fresh impetus was given to this outward movement by the changes of policy introduced by Harald Fairhair, first king of Norway (872–933). Through him a nobler type of emigrant succeeded the casual wanderer, and great lords and kings’ sons came over to consolidate the settlements begun by humbler agencies. Iceland was at the same time peopled by a similar stock. The Dane, contemporaneously with the Norseman, came by a different route. Though he seems to have been the first to invade Northumbria (if Ragnar and his sons were really Danes), his movement was chiefly round the southern shores of England, passing over by way of the Danish and Netherland coast up the English Channel, and round to the west. Both streams met in Ireland, where a sharp and lengthened contest was fought out between the two nations, and where both took deep root, building cities and absorbing much of the commerce of the country. The Viking was at first simply a bold adventurer, but a mixture of trading and raiding became a settled practice with large numbers of Norsemen, who, when work at home was slack and the harvest was sown or reaped, filled up the time by pirate inroads on their own or neighboring lands. Hardy sailors and fearless fighters they were; and life would have seemed too tame had it meant a continuous course of peaceful farming or fishing. New possessions and new conquests were the salt of life.
