Sinopsis

Finally, a philosophy book that won't make you contemplate throwing yourself into the abyss! " WHAT THE HELL" tears into Ludwig Wittgenstein—history's most insufferable genius—with savage wit and zero academic pretension.

Journey through the mind-bending contradictions of a trust-fund philosopher who claimed to solve all philosophical problems (twice!), while making everyone around him miserable. Discover how a man who couldn't maintain a single healthy relationship somehow revolutionized our understanding of language, meaning, and communication.

From his early days writing numbered lists so pretentious they make Instagram influencers look humble, to his later career interrupting people to tell them they're using words wrong, this book exposes Wittgenstein in all his paradoxical glory. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll question whether language has any meaning at all—just like Ludwig wanted!

Whether you're a philosophy student desperately seeking comic relief, or simply enjoy watching neurotic geniuses get thoroughly roasted, this irreverent guide proves that even the most profound philosophical insights can come from someone you'd absolutely hate to be seated next to at dinner. Warning: Reading this book in public may cause uncontrollable snorting in libraries and concerned looks from serious academics.

From World War Two to the Jet Age, Ian Mackersey charts the thrilling and personal accounts of airmen who have jumped from their planes and survived.

Since the test pilot Harold Harris became the first man to save his life with a parachute in 1922 there have been over 120,000 air force pilots and crew who owe their lives to their parachutes.

Into the Silk is full of astounding tales of people who against the odds bailed out of their planes and were therefore able to enter the annals of the Caterpillar Club, a society open only to men and women who survive aviation disaster with the aid of a parachute.

Mackersey records dramatic moments during the Second World War when pilots leapt from their burning planes while still being shot at by enemy fighters. He uncovers the descent of the extraordinarily lucky man who jumped from his damaged bomber but had to put his parachute on while falling through the sky and the pilot who found himself attached to a moving train and was dragged along for miles.

The book highlights the debts that all of these survivors owe to people such as Leslie Irvin, who invented the modern parachute and Sir James Martin, the great designer of ejection seats.

    The French Revolution's Famine -...

The late 18th century in France was marked by a series of economic struggles that would lay the foundation for the famine that contributed significantly to the outbreak of the French Revolution. One of the most crucial factors was the growing economic strain on both the peasantry and the urban poor. France's agrarian economy, which was heavily reliant on consistent harvests, faced major setbacks in the years leading up to the Revolution. Bad harvests in 1787 and 1788, exacerbated by poor weather conditions, decimated crops across the nation, causing widespread food shortages.
The economic problems were further compounded by rising bread prices. Bread, being a staple food for the French population, became more expensive as the grain harvests failed. With less grain available for baking, the cost of bread surged, and the poor, particularly in urban areas, found it increasingly difficult to afford enough food to survive. For many, bread was their primary source of sustenance, and its scarcity sparked anger and frustration across the nation.
This economic hardship revealed the inefficiency of the French monarchy in dealing with the crisis. King Louis XVI’s government, already deeply in debt from wars and lavish spending, was unable to provide effective solutions. The inability of the monarchy to alleviate the suffering of the common people, particularly in the face of rising food prices, further eroded public trust in the regime. The discontent simmered beneath the surface, particularly in cities like Paris, where the urban poor were most vulnerable to food shortages.
