Sinopsis

The Narrative of Sojourner Truth is a powerful autobiographical account that chronicles the life of its author, Sojourner Truth, a former enslaved woman who became an iconic figure in the fight for abolition and women's rights in the 19th century. Through her compelling and eloquent prose, Truth employs a unique rhetorical style that merges the oral tradition of African American storytelling with the intellectual rigor of abolitionist literature. This unabridged version captures the raw and unfiltered essence of her experiences, emphasizing themes of resilience, identity, and social justice against the backdrop of a nation grappling with deep-rooted inequalities. Sojourner Truth, born in New York in 1797, endured the brutal realities of slavery before rising as a formidable advocate for change. Her life experiences, marked by trauma and liberation, compelled her to share her story as a means of educating the public about the inhumanity of slavery and advocating for women's rights. Truth's prominence as a speaker and activist was amplified by her profound spiritual beliefs, which she entwined with her calls for equality, making her narrative not just a personal account but a critical intervention in social discourse. This seminal work is essential reading for anyone interested in American history, social justice, or feminist theory. Truth's voice resonates powerfully today, inviting readers to reflect on the continuing struggles for equality and the importance of personal testimony in the quest for justice. Her narrative not only informs but inspires, making it a vital addition to the canon of American literature.

Montague Rhodes James is cited as perhaps the greatest English writer of ghost stories, an opinion few would disagree with.
James was born on 1st August 1862 at Goodnestone Parsonage in Kent, where his father was Curate but at age 3 the family went to live at Livermere, near Bury St Edmunds in East Anglia.
From early childhood he had a passion for mediaeval books and antiques. He was educated initially as a boarder at Temple Grove School in East Sheen, west London, before gaining a scholarship to Eton and thence Cambridge where he gained a double first, becoming a distinguished linguist and mediaevalist.
Before the Great War vacations were usually spent touring Europe absorbing cultures and references for his later writing.
A man of enormous knowledge it was said he timed his breakfast egg whilst he completed the Times crossword.
Many of his elegant yet terrifying tales were created by discarding the prevailing gothic cliches and placing his characters and narrative in a realistic setting. Thereby the stories gained atmosphere and menace on a grand scale and he was famed as the originator of the antiquarian ghost story.
Although story-telling and writing these 30 or so tales was a hobby, when published their effect transformed the genre and still chill the bones in our more modern times.
James was also a medievalist scholar and translator whose work remains highly respected. He was also Provost of Eton College between 1918 and 1936.
M R James died on 12th June 1936 at Eton in Buckinghamshire. He was 73.

Shahbaz Taseer’s memoir of his five-year-long captivity at the hands of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan. In late August 2011, Shahbaz Taseer was driving to his office in Lahore when he was dragged from his car at gunpoint and kidnapped by members of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU), a Taliban-affiliated Uzbek terrorist group. Shahbaz’s father, the late Pakistani governor, had recently been assassinated. His crime: speaking in support of a Christian woman who had been accused of blasphemy and sentenced to death. Though Taseer himself wasn’t much interested in politics, he was somewhat of a public figure, and he represented a more tolerant, internationally connected Pakistan that the IMU despised. What followed was nearly five years of torture and harrowing danger while Taseer was held captive, his fate determined by the infighting of the IMU, the Taliban, and ISIS. Lost to the World is his memoir of that time—a story of extraordinary sorrow but also of goodness and faith. While deeply dramatic, this tale is also comedic; for Taseer, humor, as much as the Koran, provided a light by which to see his own humanity, even under the most inhumane conditions, and to find a way back to his family. In a time when Western leaders use fear-mongering rhetoric to paint all followers of Islam as dangerous fundamentalists, Lost to the World illustrates the chasm between Muslim terrorists and ordinary Muslim citizens, and how terrorist organizations gain strength from the war on terror.A Macmillan Audio production from Farrar, Straus and Giroux.
