Sinopse

A senseless murder, a gullible cowboy, and one unusual witness.

Born with a simple mind and left without family, Bosal Moon grew up under the shadow of ridicule and loneliness. Now he must escape the only home he has ever known: Dozen, the dust-laden town morality had deserted long ago. Bosal leans on his sole friend for wisdom: Preacher August Maloney.
Each day, August tends to the ravens that flock to the graveyard outside his lonesome little church. Harbingers of wayward souls, he calls them. But the most wayward soul of all belongs to the Professional Butterfly, a ravishing woman with a talent for bleeding men of their integrity. Bored and broke, the Butterfly turns her attention on August and hatches a brilliant scheme to deliver him from a disaster of biblical proportions. But her risky actions result in a shocking and untimely death. All fingers point to the Butterfly as the murderer. Only one witness remains, and he isn't talking.
Will Bosal be able to save the Professional Butterfly from the noose? Or will the callous judge get his way and hang one more wayward soul?

Aylmer has a great career as a scientist and a beautiful new wife, Georgiana. There’s only one problem—Georgiana has a small red birthmark on her cheek. Aylmer grows increasingly disgusted with the birthmark and becomes obsessed with removing the one thing barring his wife from perfection. With “The Birthmark,” Hawthorne crafted a tale of tragic irony and dangerous obsession to rival Poe’s “The Tell-Tale Heart.”

From the author of Changes: these stories “of post-independence Ghana in the late 1960s are written beautifully and wisely and with great subtlety” (Chimamanda Ngozi Adichi).   In this short story collection, the award-winning poet and author of Changes and Our Sister Killjoy explores postcolonial life in Ghana with her characteristic honesty, humor, and insight. A house servant wonders what independence means in a country where indoor plumbing is still reserved for bosses. A brother tracks down his runaway sister only to find she has become a prostitute. In the title story, a bitter divorce turns tragic when the couple’s only child dies of a snake bite.   In these and other stories, tradition wrestles with new urban influences as Africans try to sort out their identity in a changing culture, and “even at her gravest, Miss Aidoo writes with a sunny charm” (The New York Times).

“Earthy, thoughtful, funny” stories of love and despair, destiny and dumb luck, by the author of Last Exit to Brooklyn and Requiem for a Dream (Library Journal). Hubert Selby Jr. made an indelible mark on contemporary American literature with Last Exit to Brooklyn, a controversial novel that explored life at the lowest strata of urban society. But even before that novel altered the landscape of American fiction, Selby was honing his literary craft with short fiction that cast the human condition in a stark light, stories “known for their harrowing portrayal of mere mortals chasing their delusions down the drain” (Salon.com).   The stories here represent Selby at his best, whether he’s exploring a married commuter’s fantasy about a stranger he sees every morning on the subway or wryly spinning the tale of a salesman whose life is dictated by Chinese fortune cookies. In these pages, a homeless man clings to his old army coat during a bitter lost weekend; and a young man’s successful attempt to impress a girl on their first date comes back to haunt him. In the intimate, sometimes shocking portraits collected in Song of the Silent Snow, Selby finds the delicate balance between joy and despair, revealing humanity in the darkest corners of existence.   “Selby’s writing never diminished; it always increased. His body of work is among the very highest of contemporary writers. He did not get the acknowledgment that he deserved, but he will.” —John Rechy, author of City of Night  This ebook features an illustrated biography of Hubert Selby Jr. including rare photos from the author’s estate.
