Summary

Well placed to discuss the art of skiing, Arnold Lunn was editor of the Climber's Club Journal and the Alpine Ski Club Annual, founded the Oxford University Mountaineering Club, invented the skiing slalom race and was eventually knighted for his services to British Skiing and Anglo-Swiss relations.Originally published as a cheap handbook for skiing, this Classic Guide is devoted to the needs of the beginner, from the technical aspects of how to ski to what to wear while doing it, published during a time when the Alps were relatively unexplored by British skiers. As ski lifts were an unknown entity during the early twentieth century, Arnold Lunn traces the difficulties of a ski-runner and the problems encountered while mountaineering in the dangerous winter alps.

6 of 10 First Tee Nerves
Standing on the first tee of a competition can make even the most experienced of golfers feel nervous. For example, Justin Rose, a Major winner who has represented Europe in three Ryder Cup teams since 2008, admitted that he gets anxious every time he stands on the first tee of Ryder cup matches. As he said: “you never get accustomed to it. You don’t do it often enough to get comfortable”. This idea applies to all golfers – regardless of their ability level. Clearly, one reason why we feel nervous before our first shot in a competition is because we don’t play often enough in that situation. And because we want to get off the first tee as quickly as possible, we tend to swing too fast, which may produce the bad drive that we had feared. But take heart, almost every player feels anxious before a competition. And there are a number of practical steps outlined in this short audiobook which you can take to overcome this problem.

Written by Professor Aidan Moran. Aidan is Director of the Psychology Research Laboratory in University College, Dublin. Aidan’s work for the last twenty years has included one to one coaching on mental toughness with top players including Major winners. Narrated by Sara Dylan.

Contains nine special tips to improve this strategic aspect of your game, and a short visualisation exercise.

Phil Jackson's account of the Lakers' game-by-game progress through the 1999-2000 season and his views on the state of the NBA is supplemented by his friend Charley Rosen's novelist's impressions of the Lakers, Los Angeles, and the league.Though Phil Jackson won six NBA titles in eight years as coach of the Chicago Bulls, many an analyst opined that his success had less to do with his much-discussed "Zen" approach to basketball than with the presence of Michael Jordan on the Bulls roster. So in 1999, when Jackson took over a beleaguered Los Angeles Lakers team, the sports world was watching closely. As it turned out, Phil Jackson was observing himself and his new team closely, too, collaborating with his good friend Charley Rosen on a firsthand account of the 1999-2000 season and an exploration of his lifelong pursuit of the purity at the heart of the game.Throughout the season—which culminated in the Lakers winning the NBA Championship—Phil and Charley got together frequently to tape conversations about the challenge of bringing discipline and focus to a talented Lakers team that had failed to achieve its potential. Phil wrote his own account of the Lakers' game-by-game progress and his views on the state of the NBA; Charley added his novelist's impressions of the Lakers, Los Angeles, and the league. Together they bring you the fascinating inside story of the founding of a new Lakers dynasty and the triumph of Phil Jackson's hardwood metaphysics.

A hymn to walking, the mechanical magic at the core of our humanity.
In this captivating audiobook, neuroscientist Shane O’Mara invites us to marvel at the benefits walking confers on our bodies and brains, and to appreciate the advantages of this uniquely human skill. From walking’s evolutionary origins, traced back millions of years to life forms on the ocean floor, to new findings from cutting-edge research, he reveals how the brain and nervous system give us the ability to balance, weave through a crowded city, and run our “inner GPS” system. Walking is good for our muscles and posture; it helps to protect and repair organs, and can slow or turn back the aging of our brains. With our minds in motion we think more creatively, our mood improves, and stress levels fall. Walking together to achieve a shared purpose is also a social glue that has contributed to our survival as a species.
As our lives become increasingly sedentary, O’Mara makes the case that we must start walking again—whether it’s up a mountain, down to the park, or simply to school and work. In Praise of Walking illuminates the joys, health benefits, and mechanics of walking, and reminds us to get out of our chairs and discover a happier, healthier, more creative self.

Traumatic brain injury in football is not incidental, but an inevitable and central aspect of the sport. Starting in high school, through college, and into the NFL, young players face repeated head trauma, and those sustained injuries create lifelong cognitive and functional difficulties.Concussion Inc. reveals the decades-long cover-up of scientific research into sports concussions, and the ongoing denial to radically reform football in North America. This is the complete head injury story, from the doctor who played fast and loose with the facts about the efficacy of the state-mandated concussion management system for high school football players, to highly touted solutions that are more self-serving cottage industry than of any genuine benefit.Known for extensive reporting on the tragic story of the Chris Benoit murder-suicide, Muchnick turns his investigative analysis to traumatic brain injury and probes deep into the corporate, government, and media corruption that has enabled the $10-billion-a-year National Football League to trigger a public health crisis.
