Sinopsis

What were the principal causes of death in the past? Could your ancestor have been affected? How was disease investigated and treated, and what did our ancestors think about the illnesses and the accidents that might befall them? Simon Willss fascinating survey of the diseases that had an impact on their lives seeks to answer these questions. His graphic, detailed account offers an unusual and informative view of the threats that our ancestors lived with and died of. He describes the common causes of death—cancer, cholera, dysentery, influenza, malaria, scurvy, smallpox, stroke, tuberculosis, typhus, yellow fever, venereal disease and the afflictions of old age. Alcoholism is included, as are childbirth and childhood infections, heart disease, mental illness and dementia. Accidents feature prominently road and rail accidents, accidents at work and death through addiction and abuse is covered as well as death through violence and war.Simon Willss work gives a vivid picture of the hazards our ancestors faced and their understanding of them. It also reveals how life and death have changed over the centuries, how medical science has advanced so that some once-mortal illnesses are now curable while others are just as deadly now as they were then. In addition to describing causes of death and setting them in the context of the times, his book shows readers how to find and interpret patient records, death certificates and other documents in order to gain an accurate impression of how their ancestors died.

This book is not a technical introduction to Blockchain technology; there's plenty of freely accessible material on that. Instead, this book makes the case that Blockchains will have at least as much economic impact in the 21st century as corporations in the 20th century.
The Blockchain Economy provides you different perspectives on the drastic potential of Blockchain technology to disrupt nearly every business or political system in existence today.
Some of the ideas may appear evident to you; others may not yet. But in due time, many of them will be implemented in the real world by practitioners, programmers, and Blockchain architects. Myriads of new ideas and applications of Blockchain technology will see the light of the day.
Due to the disruptive value proposition of providing permissionless, trusted, secure, and decentralized information management, these applications will create new blue oceans of opportunity, breaking out of the bloody red oceans of existing centralized financial infrastructures.
In particular, you'll learn about the economic impact of Bitcoin, decentralized finance (DeFi), non-fungible tokens (NFTs), censorship-resistance, governance, and many more key Blockchain concepts--and their impact on today's economy.

The famous physicist Sir Isaac Newton lectured on optics from 1670 - 1672. He worked on refraction of light into colored beams using prisms and discovered chromatic aberration. He also postulated the corpuscular form of light and an ether to transmit forces between the corpuscles. His "Opticks", first published 1704 contains his postulates about the topic. This is the fourth edition in English, from 1730, which Newton himself had corrected from the third edition before his death. (Summary by Availle)

    I Wonder… - The Science of...

I Wonder… explores imagination and its leadership of thought. Creative and unexpected, it is designed to inspire more widespread usage, placing imagination on an equal footing with knowledge, judgment and the feelings that can overwhelm both.

J D Rhodes identifies the paradox that this highly admired skill is too often seen as remote or merely peripheral, leading to tragic waste or lost opportunity. Through years of action research, encouraging creativity within the more agile organisations, Rhodes found more of it than they made use of. Yet our success depends on growing talent and harnessing bright ideas; not just in inventing something new but thinking up objectives, foreseeing the possible causes of disaster, all risks outside the obvious, and not least how to deal with them.

I Wonder… traces the birth of ideas, revealing how they emerge from imagery, from our memories as well as our present experiences. By engineering thinking with unusual mental approaches we can learn how to reach exceptional ideas on demand.

While ingenuity drives most invention, it is when we open up to wonder that sublime envisioning breaks through, with all its awe and mystery. This total freedom allows intuition without evidence, natural pretending as of a child, and feats of astonishing connection.
