Sinopse

Video scriptwriter Richard Young is looking forward to a week at home with his wife and their little daughter. He thinks it's going to be a pleasant time of barbecues and lazy summer days. It isn't. It is going to be hell.
Because the stranger who arrives at their home, begging to be driven to the nearest police station, is being hunted. Hunted by something that cannot be seen, cannot be heard – yet which has the power to move across the land crushing flat everything in its path. Stalking and killing remorselessly.

Within minutes, Richard Young, his family and the stranger (who is not the innocent victim he seems) are being pursued relentlessly by a malignant occult force that pounds and pulps its victims like the Hammer of God itself...

Darker, first published in 1996, is another gripping horror from Simon Clark.

If human predators don't get to her first, the inhuman ones might just finish the job.Still craving the golden cavern's contents for his own, Thomas Sinclair reveals that there is much more to this nameless little town than anyone could ever have imagined. And if Caleb succeeds in all that, the bandits still want their gold one way or the other. He has no choice but to go back up the mountain to find the hidden cavern of gold and pray that his wandering memory returns in time. And if it doesn't, he might not live to see the light of another day.

Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. A few pages can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere.

In this series we try to offer up tried and trusted ‘Top Tens’ across many different themes and authors. But any anthology will immediately throw up the questions – Why that story? Why that author?

The theme itself will form the boundaries for our stories which range from well-known classics, newly told, to stories that modern times have overlooked but perfectly exemplify the theme. Throughout the volume our authors whether of instant recognition or new to you are all leviathans of literature.

Some you may disagree with but they will get you thinking; about our choices and about those you would have made. If this volume takes you on a path to discover more of these miniature masterpieces then we have all gained something.

The Edwardian era lasted under a decade at the turn of the 1900’s. Victoria was dead but everything else strode on. The Nation’s authors added to their number with new talents who attempted new ways of re-interpreting the Ghost Story. Benson, Pain and all the others found a ready audience for these sharp-edged gems and their malevolent ways.
