In a rural Minnesota town with deep German roots, people tend to their duties without fanfare or expectation, doing the work that needs to be done to keep the small community humming.
A lyrical collection of 10 intertwined short stories, The Winter Bees: Fiction introduces characters whose quiet, blue-collar lives and relationships turn into journeys of personal discovery, meaning, love, and hope. Among them is Ana, the ruby-lipped, gray-haired bartender who cooks batches of sauerkraut for patrons, keeps their glasses full, and hoards memories of a painful past in her squirrel-infested apartment above the saloon; lifelong bachelor Herman, a farmer and radio-controlled airplane enthusiast who pines for his best friend's wife across the neighboring cornfields; the bookstore owner, Shirley, who surprises herself with a moment of cruelty following an accident; a ranting, mentally ill woman known by everyone in town as The Pee Lady; and Virgil, the beloved school bus driver who finds joy in a lost-and-found box. These character-driven, poetic stories illuminate people whose commitment to duty often means personal restraint, sacrifice, and heartbreak.
"These rich, interwoven stories are where great literature comes from: the closely observed heartbreaks and joys of ordinary people's lives." - Will Weaver, author of Sweet Land: New & Collected Stories
"The stories are crystalline, beautiful, delicate, soulful, and ephemeral. This book is nothing short of a small, rare marvel." - Nickolas Butler, internationally bestselling author of Shotgun Lovesongs and The Hearts of Men
Recorded, mixed, and mastered by Erik Koskinen at his studio in Cleveland, Minnesota; additional production support: Book Buddy Media; cover art: Brian Frink, Poor Farm Studios; cover design: Lori Bye

The stories in Origin Stories take as their subject the sources of love, marriage, motherhood, friendship, artistic ambition, restiveness, and shame. Their characters perceive more than they can explain, want more than they can have, and contend with the bounty and frugality of their relationships. In "This Isn't the Actual Sea," a woman considers that her friend's failure and sudden success have given her the material she needs to write something of her own, if she's willing to risk the friendship to do so. "The Artist's Wife" describes, in a painting stowed in a bowling alley broom closet, the chasm between seeing and being seen. "Dogwood" is a piece of lyric reportage on beauty, family, and survival whose sections range from the narrator's childhood to her son's new adulthood. And "Origin Story" acts as an accounting of the many different states where a woman and her husband have lived, and what it is they've been searching for.

In this keen, meditative collection set in Southern California and Virginia, Corinna Vallianatos dramatizes the bonds of mother and child, the self-destruction of young womanhood, the thrill and bewilderment of friendship, and the power of place.

Origin Stories is filled with humor, longing, beauty, and belief.

Thomas Burke was born Sydney Thomas Burke on November 29th, 1886 in Eltham, London (at the time it was part of Kent).
An author in the early years of the 20th Century Burke brought his skills of pen and eye to parts of London, specifically the Limehouse district of the East End, to write with drive and vigour about the characters he met and the places that he knew. Whether he turned that material into fiction or non-fiction the words seep quality. His publications ranged from these wonderful vignettes of down-at-heel London to writings on homosexuality and the English Countryside.
Thomas Burke died in the Homeopathic Hospital in Queens Square, Bloomsbury on 22 September 1945.
