A spellbinding exploration of the human capacity to imagine the future

Our ability to think about the future is one of the most powerful tools at our disposal. In The Invention of Tomorrow, cognitive scientists Thomas Suddendorf, Jonathan Redshaw, and Adam Bulley argue that its emergence transformed humans from unremarkable primates to creatures that hold the destiny of the planet in their hands.

Drawing on their own cutting-edge research, the authors break down the science of foresight, showing us where it comes from, how it works, and how it made our world. Journeying through biology, psychology, history, and culture, they show that thinking ahead is at the heart of human nature—even if we often get it terribly wrong. Incisive and expansive, The Invention of Tomorrow offers a fresh perspective on the human tale that shows how our species clawed its way to control the future.

    Infinite Darkness - How Dark...

Dark matter is one of the most intriguing mysteries in modern science. Despite making up approximately 27% of the universe, it cannot be seen or detected directly using traditional instruments. The name "dark matter" itself stems from the fact that it does not emit, absorb, or reflect light, making it invisible to the electromagnetic spectrum. However, its existence is inferred from its gravitational effects on visible matter, such as galaxies, stars, and other celestial objects. Without dark matter, the motion of galaxies would not make sense, as they appear to be moving far too quickly for the amount of visible matter they contain. This unseen substance holds galaxies together and ensures the stability of the universe’s large-scale structure.
The story of dark matter begins in the 1930s with the work of Swiss astronomer Fritz Zwicky. While studying the Coma galaxy cluster, Zwicky found that the visible matter in the galaxies was not enough to account for the way the galaxies were moving. He proposed that there must be some form of unseen mass providing additional gravitational pull, which he called "dark matter." Although his hypothesis was met with skepticism, it laid the foundation for further research into this invisible force.
Over the following decades, scientists gathered more indirect evidence supporting the existence of dark matter. In the 1970s, astronomer Vera Rubin and her colleague Kent Ford observed the rotation of galaxies and found that stars on the outer edges were moving much faster than expected. Based on the laws of physics and the visible mass, these stars should have been moving more slowly and would have been flung out of their orbits. The only explanation for their high speed was the presence of a significant amount of unseen mass—dark matter.

Health care reform efforts are difficult to achieve and have been historically undermined by their narrow scope. In The Present Illness, Martin F. Shapiro, MD, PhD, MPH, weaves together history, sociology, extensive research, and his own experiences as a physician to explore the broad range of afflictions impairing US health care and explains why we won't be able to fix the system without making significant changes across society. With a sharp eye and ready humor, Shapiro dissects the ways all groups participating—clinicians and their organizations, medical schools and their faculty, hospitals and clinical corporations, scientists and the National Institutes of Health, insurers and manufacturers, governments and their policies, and also patients and the public—shape and reinforce a dysfunctional system. Shapiro identifies three major problems stymieing reform: commodification of care; values, expectations, unmet needs, attitudes, and personal limitations of participants; and toxic relationships and communication among these groups.Shapiro lays out a sweeping agenda of concrete actions to address the many factors contributing to the system's failings. Highlighting the interconnectedness of both the problems and potential solutions, he warns that piecemeal reform efforts will continue to be undermined by those who believe they have something to gain from the status quo. Although overhauling our health care system is daunting, Shapiro nonetheless concludes that we must push forward with a far more comprehensive effort in all sectors of health care and throughout society to create a system that is humane, effective, and just.
