Inevitably, as the British settled in Australia and New Zealand, they entered into conflicts with the indigenous people, and they would learn quite quickly that the Māori were quite bellicose. As such, the New Zealand Wars would last over 30 years.
The history of the indigenous inhabitants of Australia, known in contemporary anthropology as the “Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people of Australia,” is a complex and continually evolving field of study, and it has been colored by politics. For generations after the arrival of whites in Australia, the Aboriginal people were disregarded and marginalized, largely because they offered little in the way of a labor resource, and they occupied land required for European settlement.
At the same time, it is a misconception that indigenous Australians meekly accepted the invasion of their country by the British, for they did not. They certainly resisted, but as far as colonial wars during that era went, the frontier conflicts of Australia did not warrant a great deal of attention. Indigenous Australians were hardly a warlike people, and without central organization, or political cohesion beyond scattered family groups, they succumbed to the orchestrated advance of white settlement with passionate, but futile resistance. In many instances, aggressive clashes between the two groups simply gave the white colonists reasonable cause to inflict a style of genocide on the Aborigines that stood in the way of progress. In any case, their fate had largely been sealed by the first European sneeze in the Terra Australis, which preceded the importation of the two signature mediums of social destruction. The first was a collection of alien diseases, chief among smallpox, but also cholera, influenza, measles, tuberculosis, syphilis and the common cold.

Two must-have classics together in one volume, On Writing Well and How to Write a Memoir, from acclaimed writer, editor, and scholar William Zinsser
""On Writing Well is a bible for a generation of writers looking for clues to clean, compelling prose."" –New York Times
On Writing Well, which grew out of a course that William Zinsser taught at Yale, has been praised for its sound advice, its clarity, and for the warmth of its style. It is a book for anybody who wants to learn how to write or who needs to do some writing to get through the day, as almost everybody does. Whether you want to write about people or places, science and technology, business, sports, the arts, or about yourself in the increasingly popular memoir genre, On Writing Well offers you both fundamental principles as well as the insights of a distinguished practitioner. With over a million copies in print, this volume has stood the test of time and remains a valued resource for writers and would-be writers.
Whether you're a professional writer or just want to write a personal or family reminisce, Zinsser explains, in warm anecdotal detail in How to Write a Memoir, how a memoir is different from an autobiography; what makes a good memoir and a bad memoir; how to decide what part of your life to write about, and how to be true to your own personality and voice. Throughout he cites examples from the work of successful memoir writers including Annie Dillard, Frank McCourt, and Eudora Welty, demonstrating how they solved problems of compression, focus, and tone, often overcoming early mistakes that took them in the wrong direction.

I had heard tales of women with secret knowledge and powers, but I never imagined that there would be one standing right in front of me.
“You’re a Völva?” the word rolled off my tongue strangely...
I only knew faintly what a Völva was. They were said to be strange women with strange powers. Not only could they protect and ward against ill omens, but they could also travel the realms and reach into places untapped by most humans. As such, they were often spoken of in whispers of both reverence and mystery.
“Yes, I am. And an old one at that,” she said, getting up from her chair.
It seemed so casual as if she was just talking about a mindless chore that she was doing. Like it was nothing special that she had just performed some form of magic right in front of me.
For two years, I learned everything I could on runes, protections, herbs, medicines, and anything else that Dagmar deemed necessary. In the few moments I had that were not dedicated to lessons from Dagmar, I would seek out Ivar for his quiet presence. There was just something about being near him that set my mind at ease.
All that consumed my thoughts was avengement and how close Ulrik was. Soon he would taste the bitter sting of defeat.
In the realms of Norse Mythology, a girl sets out to avenge her village only to meet a powerful teacher on her journey into the abyss of forbidden knowledge.
