Sinopsis

The historical figure of the dandy has commonly been described as an upper-class gentleman. But there is a broader history to be told about the dandy—one that incorporates unknown men from the lower strata of society. The Dandy: A People's History constitutes the first history of those dandies who emanated from the less privileged layers of the populace—the lowly clerks, shop assistants, domestic servants, and laborers who increasingly during the modern age have emerged as style-conscious men about town.A series of fascinating in-depth studies of the wide variety of dandy subcultures that have surfaced around the world in the last two centuries tell the story of how the shaping of fashions and the image of men became increasingly democratized, with the arbiters of taste increasingly coming from the other end of the social spectrum. We encounter such long-forgotten groups as the mashers, the knuts, the Paris gandins and the Berlin transgender dandies, alongside unexplored figures like the zoot suiter, the teddy boy, and the New Romantic. This is a story of how fundamental aspects of modern culture such as fashion, style, and conduct have been shaped from below just as much as from above.

This gripping audiobook narrated by John Telfer provides an authoritative history of Rome's Great Fire and the lasting harm it inflicted on the Roman Empire

According to legend, the Roman emperor Nero set fire to his majestic imperial capital on the night of July 19, 64 AD and fiddled while the city burned. It's a story that has been told for more than two millennia—and it's likely that almost none of it is true. In Rome Is Burning, distinguished Roman historian Anthony Barrett sets the record straight, providing a comprehensive and authoritative account of the Great Fire of Rome, its immediate aftermath, and its damaging longterm consequences for the Roman world. Drawing on remarkable new archaeological discoveries and sifting through all the literary evidence, he tells what is known about what actually happened—and argues that the disaster was a turning point in Roman history, one that ultimately led to the fall of Nero and the end of the dynasty that began with Julius Caesar.
Rome Is Burning tells how the fire destroyed much of the city and threw the population into panic. It describes how it also destroyed Nero's golden image and provoked a financial crisis and currency devaluation that made a permanent impact on the Roman economy. Most importantly, the book surveys recent archaeological evidence that shows visible traces of the fire's destruction. Finally, the book describes the fire's continuing afterlife in literature, opera, ballet, and film.

A richly detailed and scrupulously factual narrative of an event that has always been shrouded in myth, Rome Is Burning promises to become the standard account of the Great Fire of Rome for our time.

The Ottoman Empire's collapse at the end of the First World War is often treated as a foregone conclusion. It was only a matter of time, the story goes, before the so-called Sick Man of Europe succumbed to its ailments—incompetent management, nationalism, and ethnic and religious conflict. In The War That Made the Middle East, Mustafa Aksakal overturns this conventional narrative. The War That Made the Middle East shows that, until 1914, the Ottoman Empire was a viable multiethnic, multireligious state, and that relations between the Arabs, Jews, Muslims, and Christians of Palestine were relatively stable. When war broke out, the Ottoman government sought an alliance with the Entente but was rejected because of British and French designs on the Eastern Mediterranean. After the Ottomans entered the fight on the side of Germany and were defeated, Britain and France seized Ottoman lands and new national elites in former Ottoman territories claimed their own states. The region was renamed "the Middle East," erasing a robust and modernizing 600-year-old empire.A sweeping narrative of war, great power politics, and ordinary people caught up in the devastation, The War That Made the Middle East offers new insights about the Great War and its profound and lasting consequences.

This audiobook is narrated by an AI Voice.
To try and sum up this book in a few sentences, is very difficult.
    It is a complex subject!
It talks about the relationship between mind and body – in fact not just mind and body, but creation itself, and how our physical reality is brought about by what we habitually think.
So thought is spiritual, and is the basis for our entire creation.
To bring anything into reality, it must be first thought of – conceptualised.
The creation of the physical follows the thought.
The book spends some time discussing our bodies, and the makeup thereof. Both the physical makeup, where there are many types of cells, each with its own unique function, and the spiritual makeup, where there is the conscious and subconscious mind.
Our bodies are run and managed by the subconscious mind, which is independent, but linked to the conscious mind, where thoughts can be impressed on the subconscious by the conscious mind.
So be careful what you habitually think, as it can become your reality – think positively all the time, or certainly as much as you can!
As the original book was written in 1922, and the audiobook is a straightforward translation, the language can sometimes be difficult to understand, but persevere!
The messages and explanations given about life, our thoughts and our reality are fascinating, and immensely valuable.
Well worth the time to listen!

While Belgium is bleeding and hoping, while Poland suffers and dreams of liberation, while Serbia is waiting for redemption, there is a little country the soul of which is torn to pieces—a little country that is so remote, so remote that her ardent sighs cannot be heard. It is the country of perpetual sacrifice, the country that saw Abraham build the altar upon which he was ready to immolate his only son, the country that Moses saw from a distance, stretching in beauty and loveliness,—a land of promise never to be attained,—the country that gave the world its symbols of soul and spirit. Palestine! No war correspondents, no Red Cross or relief committees have gone to Palestine, because no actual fighting has taken place there, and yet hundreds of thousands are suffering there that worst of agonies, the agony of the spirit. Those who have devoted their lives to show the world that Palestine can be made again a country flowing with milk and honey, those who have dreamed of reviving the spirit of the prophets and the great teachers, are hanged and persecuted and exiled, their dreams shattered, their holy places profaned, their work ruined. Cut off from the world, with no bread to sustain the starving body, the heavy boot of a barbarian soldiery trampling their very soul, the dreamers of Palestine refuse to surrender, and amidst the clash of guns and swords they are battling for the spirit with the weapons of the spirit. The time has not yet come to write the record of these battles, nor even to attempt to render justice to the sublime heroes of Palestine. This book is merely the story of some of the personal experiences of one who has done less and suffered less than thousands of his comrades.(Summary from the Introduction)
