  The Awakening is an 1899 novel by Kate Chopin set in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast at the end of the 19th century. It is widely seen as a seminal work of early feminism which put the spotlight on women's issues.The story is about Edna Pontellier, the wife of a New Orleans businessman, who falls in love with Robert Lebrun, a man she meets at a resort on the Gulf of Mexico. When the family returns to New Orleans, Edna isolates herself from society and withdraws from some of the duties customarily associated with motherhood. Edna has two friends that give her opposite advice: her close friend Adèle Ratignolle, and the pianist Mademoiselle Reisz, who lives a life of independence. Ultimately Robert withdraws from Edna’s life, claiming in a note that he refuses to shame her in the eyes of society. The combination of realistic narrative, psychological complexity and social commentary makes The Awakening a forerunner of American modernist literature and prefigures the works of novelists like William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway.

  First published in 1922 as part of Fitzgerald's Tales of the Jazz Age, this short story calls upon the author's innate sense to focus on the sense of disaster and is often regarded as one of his best short story works. Fitzgerald himself comments, "Of this story I can say that it came to me in an irresistible form, crying to be written. It will be accused perhaps of being a mere piece of sentimentality, but, as I saw it, it was a great deal more. If, therefore, it lacks the ring of sincerity, or even, of tragedy, the fault rests not with the theme but with my handling of it."

  Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was the pre-eminent figure in late nineteenth century detective fiction. A physician by profession, he soon found such popularity as a writer of detective stories that his writing was far more profitable than his medical practice. 
  The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle is a classic Sherlock Holmes story in which the Commissionnaire brings Holmes a hat and a goose which have been dropped by a man on the street, during an attempted mugging. Holmes is able to make some deductions about the mystery man from his hat - but it is the goose which provides the biggest mystery. 
  When the Commissionnaire takes it home to roast, his wife discovers a rare blue diamond in the bird's crop. Not just any diamond... the famous blue carbuncle which was recently stolen in a daring burglary at a smart London hotel. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson set to work at once to solve the case.
