Fíasól is an eight-year-old traveller. She celebrated her birthday in pouring rain in a trailer tent in the east of Iceland and gave everyone on the campsite a piece of cake and hot chocolate. Fíasól says that she’s spent half her life sleeping in a tent but Mum says that’s just rubbish. In the hallway at home is a small suitcase that nobody is allowed to touch. Fíasól has stuffed everything into it she might need, should she suddenly have to go travelling.
“This family is always going off here there and everywhere,” she says. “I may as well have my suitcase ready if I need to whizz off somewhere. One simply lives in a suitcase, always off somewhere, such a nomad,” she says, shaking her head precociously. She has sometimes heard her grandmother say this when she and her grandfather come back from the Canary Islands.
“You don’t even know what a nomad is,” says Pippa laughing.
“Yeah, a nomad is a wanderer and I am a wanderer,” replied Fíasól, pleased with herself.
Fíasól still lives on Green Grove in Grasby with her mum, dad and her sisters Pippa and Bidda. She also lives there with the noisybags and lazybones Hansína and Jensína who bark non-stop when they’re not sleeping. Then they lie on their backs in the basket in the kitchen, snoring like little monsters.
One day there was an awful lot of rain in Green Grove and Fíasól was bored. She painted her face to look like an American native, using yellow, green and blue face paints, and then she implored her mum to let her paint her too.
“Please Mum, let me change you into a native American chief,” Fíasól begged, while her mum kept working on her computer.
“No, absolutely not,” Mum muttered, preoccupied.
“So you’re just a boring old hag,” said Fíasól moodily. “Can’t be bothered, don’t know how to play and don’t want to do anything that’s fun.”

Afraid her sister (and maybe even herself) could lose sight of their Vietnamese identity, twelve-year-old Bom writes a poetic memoir to help them both remember—a love letter in verse to sisterhood and the places we leave behind. Bom can't believe that her sister doesn't see herself as Vietnamese, only American. She says she doesn't remember Vietnam or their lives there, their family there, their house and friends. How could her sister forget the terrible journey through Saigon and the airplanes and . . . everything? And what about Bom? She remembers now, but how long will she keep her memories? She always found comfort in the sound of her father's typewriter. Clickity-clack, clickity-clack. So she has an idea. She'll write down all that she can remember: the time when her father was a spy, when her mother was nicknamed a "radio," when they were so hungry Bom couldn't walk well, when the family all said goodbye. Bom will even tell her sister, and herself, about what it was like moving to Tennessee. The ESL classes, bullies, strange new foods, icy weather, friendships, and crushes—and how her family worked to keep their heritage alive. She'll type one poem at a time, until they'll never forget again.

The Engineer by Frederik Pohl and C. M. Kornbluth - The Big Wheels of tomorrow will be men who can see the big picture. But blowouts have small beginnings....
It was very simple. Some combination of low temperature and high pressure had forced something from the seepage at the ocean bottom into combination with something in the water around them.
And the impregnable armor around Subatlantic Oil's drilling chamber had discovered a weakness.
On the television screen it looked more serious than it was—so Muhlenhoff told himself, staring at it grimly. You get down more than a mile, and you're bound to have little technical problems. That's why deepsea oil wells were still there.
Still, it did look kind of serious. The water driving in the pitted faults had the pressure of eighteen hundred meters behind it, and where it struck it did not splash—it battered and destroyed. As Muhlenhoff watched, a bulkhead collapsed in an explosion of spray; the remote camera caught a tiny driblet of the scattering brine, and the picture in the screen fluttered and shrank, and came back with a wavering side-wise pulse.
Muhlenhoff flicked off the screen and marched into the room where the Engineering Board was waiting in attitudes of flabby panic.
As he swept his hand through his snow-white crew cut and called the board to order a dispatch was handed to him—a preliminary report from a quickly-dispatched company trouble-shooter team. He read it to the board, stone-faced.
