Father Frederick William Faber was a beloved spiritual writer, preacher, and superior of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri in London. An Oxford scholar and Anglican priest since 1839, Faber converted to Roman Catholicism in 1845 following his mentor John Henry (later Cardinal) Newman. During the 1850s, Father Faber published several popular spiritual books, which have been treasured by Catholics ever since: All for Jesus, Growth in Holiness, The Blessed Sacrament, The Creator and the Creature, The Foot of the Cross, Spiritual Conferences, The Precious Blood, and Bethlehem. The present work, Kindness, which bears an imprimatur, is taken in part from Spiritual Conferences, which was published in 1859. (Introduction by dave7)

Randall cannot remember a day in the last ten years that he has not spent beside his canine friend, Eduardo the Magnificento, or Ed. Ever since Rand found the pup nestled against a hot-water pipe, the two have been inseparable, spending countless hours together wandering through the woods on adventures, some make-believe and some real. But now, Ed's gone missing, and Rand takes it upon himself to seek out his four-legged friend. Unfortunately, the hunter loses his friend's tracks amongst those of a much more sinister type, ogres.
Rand assumes the worst, and gets himself into a very difficult situation involving ogres, clubs and, “tush paper”? Will Rand rescue or even find his friend? Or will he be the main entree for an ogre village that's already whetted its appetite with canine? The resulting story is one of friendship and resolve, irony and heroism, and mud. It might not make you laugh, but you'll smirk a few times, as the lives of Eduardo the Magnificento, Randall and a group of unsuspecting ogres become intertwined.
And there's a twist at the end you'll never see coming! Or you might. Just act like you didn't, it'll be a lot more fun.

Ovid's Metamorphoses is an epic poem written in Latin, composed of fifteen books, which explores the theme of transformation and change. The narrative follows a chronological order, beginning with the world's creation and ending with the reign of Julius Caesar. Ovid retells traditional Greek and Roman myths, focusing on the transformations of gods, heroes, and mortals as they undergo physical, emotional, and psychological changes that reflect the complexities of the human experience. Some of the most famous stories in the Metamorphoses include the tales of Apollo and Daphne, Pyramus and Thisbe, Narcissus and Echo, and the fall of Icarus. While modern scholars consider this epic poem to be Ovid's magnum opus, the work was not well received by its contemporaries; the Roman emperor Augustus went so far as to exile Ovid and ban his books from Rome's libraries. Today, this work is considered one of the most influential works in Western culture and has inspired countless authors like Shakespeare, Chaucer, and Dante.

Ulysses S. Grant faces mortality and his own failing memory in this “exciting and vivid” play by the Tony Award-winning author of Six Degrees of Separation (Michael Feingold, Village Voice).

Arthur Schlesinger calls A Few Stout Individuals “a political extravaganza.” This latest work from award-winning playwright John Guare, author of House of Blue Leaves and Six Degrees of Separation, addresses ideas of history and memory, fame and ignominy, reason and insanity with his trademark Guare imagination.

In a Fifth Avenue brownstone in 1880s New York, former president and Civil War general Ulysses S. Grant is penniless, dying of throat cancer, and attempting to finish his memoirs while he’s cajoled and pestered by everyone from his wife and children to Samuel Clemens (aka Mark Twain) and, by way of drug-induced hallucinations, the Emperor of Japan. A thoroughly original play that explores the nature of memory, ambition, and history itself, A Few Stout Individuals is “unmistakably the product of Mr. Guare’s exotic yet very American imagination” (Ben Brantley, The New York Times).
